STAY AND PASTI-:NERV
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 605,402, dated June '7, 1898.
Application iiled March 14, 1896.
To all whom it may concern.:
Be it known that I, PARLEY A DAILEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stays and Fasteners, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to stays for ladies" dresses, corsets, and the like; and the object is to provide a device of that character which shall be a combined fastener and stay, one side of which is rigid against sideWise movement, while the other side is composed of a series of jointed sections adapted to be secured to the other part, the whole when fastened together being rigid and incapable of sidewise movement. v
The invention therefore consists in the matters hereinafter 4referred toV in the appended claim, whereby a simple, cheap, and very effective stay and fastener is secured.
The invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure l is a front View, partly in section, showing a 'dress-front provided with my in-l vention. Fig. 2 is a detail view of one of the jointed sections, and Fig. 3 is a detail of the fastening device.
In the drawings, A represents a portion of the front of a corset, dress, o r other garment to which my improved fastener and stay is shown attached. e
The rigid portion B of the device is composed of a strip of steel or other suitable material either covered with cloth and sewed to the body of the garment or having leyeletholes through which threads are passed, securing it in place. By the term rigid as applied t0 this portion I mean that it is incapable of sidewise bending, but is flexible to accommodate itself to the forward and backward bending of the bodynof the wearer.
opposite sides plates a t, one, a, having a tongue c extending over the edge and bent to form a partial hook, while the plate I) senti No. 583,185. No model.)
forms a spring normally bearing againstthe hooked end of the tongue c, an eye or loop d on 'the part C of the stay or fastener being adapted to engage the hook c and held in engagement therewith by the spring-plate b.
The part C is composed of a series of secthat any sidewise movement of the device as a whole is prevented; but the jointed sectional Vpart C permits easier releasing and u'nfastening by the wearer than those devices now in use, these sections affording a lever by action on which the next higher catch is readily released.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A stay and fastener consisting of the mem ber Cformed of longitudinally-extending sections D pivoted together at their adjacent overlapped ends, said sections each having on the lower end of its outer edge an integral eye d, a similar eye on the upper end of the upper section D the eyes d intermediate the upper and lower members D being located in transverse alinement with the pivot-points of the members D, `and the mating non-sectional member B provided with a Aseries of fastenings in transverse alinement with said pivots and eyes and each comprising a transverse plate a on theouter side of said member and having at its outer end a transverse tongue c to project inwardly through an eye d, and a longer spring-plate ZJ at the under side of said member and extending at its free end across the end of tongue c; said plates a, b being riveted together through themember B; substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
PARLEY A. DAILEY.
