UNITED STATES PATENT OF ICE.
JAMES STONE, OF AURORA, ILLINOIS.
CORSET.
$PECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 341,701, dated May 11, 1886.
Application filed August 21, 1885. Serial No. 174,991. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES STONE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Aurora, in,
the county of Kane and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Corsets, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention has relation to improvements in corsets; and the novelty consists in'the peculiar construction and combination of parts, substantially as hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In corsets as heretofore ordinarily constructed the stiffening strips or blades of whalebone, steel, bamboo, &c., are liable to shortly wear through the binding or inclosing material, and to wear the underclothing and prick or injure the wearer.
Myinvention has for its object to overcome the above-named objection by means which shall combine simplicity, strength, and durability of construction with thorough effectiveness of operation and cheapness and facility of manufacture.
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a half of a corset or section having my improvements applied thereto. Figs. 2 and 3 are enlarged detail views of the binding or re-enforcing strip.
Referring to the drawings, in the several figures of which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts, A designates a corset section or half as ordinarily constructed and in use, and having a series of strengthening or bracing strips, B, of whalebone, bamboo, steel, and the like, the upper and lower edges of the corset usually having a binding of tape or some other suitable or preferable material. \Vhen the corset is provided with this form of binding, the bamboo, &c., is liable to wear through said binding in a very short time through excessive motion of the wearer caused by walking and breathing, the part mostly subjected to wear being the lower ends of the steel, bamboo, &c., where they press or bear against the form of the wearer.
In lieu of the ordinary tape binding at the bottom or lower edge of the corset, I provide a re-enforcing strip, 0, which is sewed thereon in any preferable manner. The re-enforcing strip comprises a stout strong piece of textile fabric, which is bent over upon itself so that its upper edges will fit on opposite surfaces of the lower edge of the corset proper, and be L fastened thereon or secured thereto in any preferable mannerby sewing, for instance. At the lower edge the said reenforcing strip is provided with a series of longitudinallyarranged cords or strips, D, which are separated a short distance from each other and within the layers of the fabric G, to which they are secured independently of each other by means of aseries of intermediate stitches,d.
I do not limit myself to any particular number of cords, or to the manner in which they are secured within the layers of the re-enforcing strip, as changes therein can be made without departing from the spirit of my invention, the essential feature of which is a reenforcing strip adapted to be secured to the lower edge of a corset, and havinga series of longitudinal cords independently secured therein and transversely across the lower ends of the stiffening-bracessuch as steel, bamboo, whalebone, &c.
It will be observed that the lower edge of the corset, together with its stiffening-braces, extends into re-enforcing strip to the first of the series of cords D, which, being secured therein independently of each other and transversely across the lower ends of said stiffeningbraces, serves to prevent the said braces from easily wearing through the material and inj uring the underclothing or skin of the wearer, all the wear and friction arising from the movements of the wearer on the lower ends of the braces being taken up by the cords, each of which is in turn acted on when the adjacent upper one has been worn through.
The upper edge of the corset may be provided with the re-enforcing strip,if desired, and said strip may be finished in any suitable design that taste may desire.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A corset having a re-enforcing strip secured to the lower edge thereof, overlapping the same and its stiffening-braces, said re-enforcing strip having a series of longitudinal cords secured therein below the edge of the corset, as set forth. v
2. As an improved article of manufacture,
a corset having are-enforcing strip secured to In testimony that I claim the foregoing as and. overlapping the lower edge thereof and my own I have hereto affixed my signature in [0 the stiffening braces, said re-enforcing strip presence of two witnesses. comprising a piece of textile fabric bent upon T itself, and having a series of longitudinal JAMES STOL spaced-apart cords secured therein by stitch- \Vitnesses:
ing independently of each other and below A. O. LITTLE, the corset-edge, substantially as described. D. B. GORDON.
