OLAF H. HANSEN, OF GLASGOW, MONTANA.
SHOE-FASTENING.
Application filed. April 25, 1914.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLAr H. HANSEN, citizen of the United States, residing at Glasgow, in the county of Valley and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoe-Fastenings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in shoes, and its primary object is the provision of a shoe closure which will obviate the necessity of the use of lacings and buttons, and by means of which the front open side of the upper may be effectively sealed against the admission of snow.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a shoe closure by means of which the upper may be brought into and held in snug and comfortable engagement with the ankle.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a shoe closure which will materially add to the appearance of the shoe.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a shoe constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional View taken on a vertical plane indicated by the line 2-9. of Fig. 1, looking in the direction indicated by the arrow, and Fig. 8 is a view in side elevation of a fragmentary portion of the upper, illustrating the manner in which the upper may be secured in closed position.
Referring to the drawings by reference numerals, 1 designates the vamp and 2 the upper of a shoe constructed in accordance with my invention, the upper comprising sides 3 and 4. The lower front portion of the side 3 is extended in the direction of the side 4, to provide the inner member 5 of a closure for the open side of the upper 1. The lower edge 6 of the member 5 is stitched, as at 7, to the upper side of the vamp 1, and the free edge 7 thereof is inclined inwardly and upwardly from the vamp 1, to and in the direction of the front edge 8 of the side 3. If desired the member 5 may Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 9, 1915.
Serial No. 834,454.
be made separately and stitched to the side 3.
The outer member 9 of the closure is stitched as at 10 to the outer surface of the side 4, and is adapted, when in closed position, to overlie the inner member 5 and the side The free edge of the outer member 9 is inclined inwardly and downwardly to and in the direction of the front edge of the section 4. Near its upper edge, the member 9 has secured thereto an outwardly extending tab 11, which is provided at its free end with a buckle 12. The tab 11 extends across the face. of the outer member 9 and is secured thereto by stitches 13. A strap 14 is provided with a substantially V-shaped inner end 15, the terminals of which are secured in relatively spaced relation to the outer side of the member 5 adjacent its edge 7. The strap 14 passes under the outer member 9 and out through a slit 16. To secure the members 5 and 9 in position to close the open front side of the upper 1. the free end of the strap 14 is engaged with the buckle 12. To permit of an adjustable closing of the members 5 and 9, the free end of the strap 14 is provided with a series of openings 15. The upper edge of the member 9 is inclined downwardly and outwardly in the direction of the inclined side edge of said member.
It should be apparent from the above description. taken in connection with the accompanving drawings, that I provide a simple and effective closure for the open front side of a shoe upper. As the inner end of the strap 14 is secured at two points to the inner member 5. and owing to the inclined upper and side edges of the outer member 9. the members may be drawn into and held in snug and comfortable engagement with the ankle. The secured portion of the tab 11 reinfo ces the outer member 9. The strap 14 is held against accidental downward movement by the walls of the slit 16.
To give to the outer member 9 a curvature conforming to the configuration of the ankle, the member is slotted and the side walls of the slot are brought together, as at 9 the side walls being held in engagement by the stitches 18.
In practice, the outer member 9 of the closure is thrown to one side. as illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawing. \Vith the outer member 9 in this position, the shoe may be readily applied, after which the member 9 is folded upon the member 5 and the side 3. The free end of the strap 15 is then brought into engagement With the buckle 12, securing the closure in position to seal the front open side of the upper.
From the foregoing it is evident that many changes might be made in the form and arrangement of the various parts described Without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and hence I do not Wish to limit myself to the exact construction herein set forth; but,
Having thus fully disclosed my invention, What I claim as new and desire to se cure by Letters Patent is:
A shoe having, in combination, an inner closure member extending from one side of the upper, an outer closure member secured to the other side of the upper, said outer member being slotted and the side Walls of the slot brought together to give to the member a curvature corresponding to the configuration of the ankle, means holding the side Walls in engagement, and means for securing the members in closed position. In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
