QUARTER BOOT FOR HORSES. No. 339,050. Patented Mar. 30, 1886.
Mentor;
N. PETERS, Pholo-Lvihognpher WashInglom DC NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
QUARTER-BOOT FOR HORSES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 339,050, dated March 30, 1886.
Application filed May I, 1885. Serial No. 164,090. (No model.)
T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES DREW, of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Quarter-Boots for Horses, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a perspective View of the quarter-boot. Fig. 2 is a side View of the same with part broken out.
A is a sock, of soft leather, formed to envelop the whole of the hoof except the sole. This is open in front and secured at this point by straps and buckles a a. The boot has a piece of harness or other leather, B, which extends around the hind part of the hoof and extends from the lower edge of the hoof to its crest, and which is stitched to the sock A, that forms a lining for piece B.
G O are two pieces of harness or otherleath er Whose under or rear edges are made fast to the upper edge of the piece B, and which are so shaped that when the boot is secured to the hoof pieces 0 lie snugly upon the quarters of the hoof, the sock of course being interposed between them and forming a lining to them.
D D are re-enforcing strips of leatl1er,which cover the joints between the pieces B and O, and which are stitched in position.
E is a central metal tooth, which is secured to the back part of the boot, and which is formed to rest in the middle crease or recess of the frog (of the hoof,) so as to hold the boot 5 down upon the hoof. The tooth is shown as secured in position by rivets Fandasurrounding line of stitches extending through thelayers of leather,between which its upper part is inserted.
I have described the hook E as made of meta], and this is the material I prefer; but any material may be used that would answer the described purpose without essentially changing the principle of construction.
I claim 1. The combination, with aquarter-boot, of the central tooth, E, secured to the rear part of the boot and adapted to fit the frog-reeess, substantially as set forth.
2. A quarter-boot consisting of a sock, A, a piece, 13, pieces 0 and (J, secured to the upper edge of said piece B, re-enforce strips D D, covering the joints between said pieces B and C O, and a central tooth, E, the said tooth adapted to fit the frog-recess, substantially as set forth.
OH ARLES DREV.
