HORSE-BLANKET Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented NOV. 2, 1909.
Application filed August 24, 1908. Serial No. 450,013.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH l/V. PEIRCE, citizen of the United States, residing at Cornish, in the county of Sullivan and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horse Blankets, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a blanket adapted to encircle the body of four footed animals, the several parts of which are designed to be adjustably connected to bring the garment more closely in contact with the animal and be retained thereon.
The essential feature of blankets constrncted in accordance with my invention, resides in the peculiar means whereby the blanket is held in position upon the body of an animal without danger of becoming shifted either longitudinally or laterally, my object being to provide a horse blanket which may be adjusted to fit snugly to the animal and which is held from any shifting movement in any direction after being adjusted, and which is so constructed to these ends that its appearance will not be injured nor the cost of its production increased.
For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction and the means for effecting the result, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side view of the garment applied to an animal; and, Fi 2 is an inside face view of the blanket opened.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawing by the same reference characters.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the blanket or body portion of the garment composed of one or two pieces of material and provided with a longitudinal back strap 2 stitched or otherwise secured to the adjoining edges of each piece of material when the blanketis made in sections, and extending its entire length between the neck opening 3 and the opposite end. The outer edges of the material defining the neck opening 3 are bound with a binding material a to prevent fraying and it is provided with a sheath arranged at said neck opening to contain a draw string 5 for regulating and adjusting the neck opening to closely fit the neck of an animal.
The numeral 6 designates a girth strap secured to the outer face of the blanket 1, between the openings 7 and adapted to protrude through said openings to the inner face, and the ends of the strap may be tied or otherwise fastened.
Blanket straps 8 are secured at their upper ends to the rear end of the back strap 2 and extend diagonally downward and forward to slits 9 formed in the forward portion of the blanket near its lower edge. The straps extend through the slits 9 to the inside of the blanket, as shown in Fig. 2, and are there provided with slide buckles 10 permitting the ends of the straps 8 to be adj usted so as to lengthen or shorten the straps to suit them to various sized animals. The straps 8, when the blanketis in position, are adapted to be passed. between the legs of the animal and to have their clips or snap hooks 11 engaged with rings 12 which are fastened at opposed points on a margin of the neck opening. As will be seen from Fig. 1, the girth strap 6 extends around the exterior of the rear portion of the blanket which is forward of the crupper and extends over and is preferably stitched or otherwise fastened to the longitudinal back strap 2 and the flank straps 8, the exterior portion of the girth 6 being designated by the numeral 13 provided with slide buckles 10 at the forward end thereof adapted to adjust the length of the detached portion of said straps. These straps as before stated, pass through the openings 9 from the outer to the inner face of the blanket and thence between the fore legs of the animal to the lower ends of that portion of the blanket which forms the neck opening and are secured thereto by means of hooks l1 retained within the loops formed by the slide buckles l0, and engaging rings or eyes 12 secured to the blanket at both sides where it forms said neck opening.
Particular attention is called to the flank straps 8 arranged to cross the back at the crupper and extending downwardly and forwardly to the front end of the blanket and pass between the fore legs of the animal, in that the garment is adjustably braced in two distinct directions and the side portions held closely in contact with the body of the animal at all times. It will also be noted that the girth strap 6 in addition to holding the 7 rear part of the blanket closely in relation to the animals body cooperates with the flank straps in preventing side or lengthwise movement. As both of the straps 8 are adjustable, the blanket may be used for different sized animals.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
l. A horse blanket of the character described, comprising a body portion provided with a neck opening, a girth strap extending around the body portion atthe rear thereof and passing through slits in the side of the body portion, and opposed flank straps attached at their upper ends to the body portion in rear of the girth strap and extending downwardly and forwardly toward the front end of the blanket and on the exterior thereof, and then through the slits in the same, said flank straps having means at their ends whereby they may be passed bet-ween the fore-legs of an animal and attached to the margin of the neck opening.
2. A horse blanket provided with a neck opening and having a strap attached to and extending longitudinally along the center of the blanket, a girth strap secured at its middle to the longitudinal strap and having its ends passing through openings in the body of the blanket adjacent to the lower edges thereof, and opposed flank straps secured at their upper ends to the rear end of the longitudinal strap, said flank straps passing downwardly and forwardly to the front of the blanket and then passing through slits, the ends of the flank straps being provided with means whereby they may be detachably connected to the margin of the neck opening.
3. A horseblanket having a neck opening at one end provided with means whereby it may be contracted, the margin of the neck opening being provided with rings, a lon gitudinal strap extending along the mlddle.
of the blanket from front to rear, agirth strap attached to said middle strap and extending over the face of the blanket nearly to the margins thereof and then passing through slits in the same, and flank straps attached to the longitudinal. strap near the rear end of the blanket and extending divergently toward the forward corners of the same, and at their forward ends passing through slits formed in the blanket, said flank straps at their termination being pro vided with engaging devices, whereby the flank straps may be passed between the fore legs of the animal and the engaging devices thereon connected to said rings.
t. A horse blanket having a neck opening at one end and a marginal strap secured to the margin of the blanket and the neck opening, a draw string inclosed in the marginal strap at the neck opening and having free ends whereby it may be drawn up, a longitudinal median strap attached to the blanket and extending froin front torear, a girth strap secured at its middle to the median strap and extending transversely across the L exterior face of the blanket, nearly to the margins thereof, and there passed through slits in the blanket, flank straps secured to the median strap rearward of the girth strap, extending forwardly beneath the girth strap and divergently to each other toward the forward corners of the blanket, said flank straps passing through openings in the blanket and being formed at their ends with hooks, the neck opening being provided with rings adapted to engage with said hooks on the flank straps.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
