To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN C. FERGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Albuquerque, in the county of Bernalillo and Territory of New Mexico, have invented new and useful Improvements in Overall Garments, of which the following is a specification.

My invention pertains to overall garments of the union type; and it has for one of its objects to provide such a garment constructed with a viewof adapting it to be placed on and removed from the body with great facility.

Another object of the invention is to provide a union overall garment embodying a normally closed seat-flap, whereby it may be readily opened at the back when necessary.

The invention is designed more particularly as an improvement upon the overall garment constituting the subject-matter of the Letters Patent granted to Anton 1 1. Lundgard under date of July 13, 1897, No. 586,102, and it will be fully understood from the following description and claims when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation illustrating my novel overall garment as the same appears when opened at the front to adapt it to be quickly and easily placed on or removed from the body; Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of. the garment with the seat-flap unfastened and ready to be opened; and Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail section, taken through the longitudinal center of the back of the garment and illustrating the relative arrangement of the body portion of the garment, the seat-flap, and the elastic band and resilient strip hereinafter referred to in detail.

Similar letters designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings.

Referring to the drawings, A is thebody portion of my novel garment, which is preferably equipped with the usual sleeves a and collar 6, and B B are the leg portions, which are formed in one piece with the body portion. In addition to the sleeves a and the collar Z) the body portion A is provided with a longitudinal central front opening a, which extends from the crotch of the garment to the upper end thereof, and openings (Z, which extend laterally in opposite directions from the opening 0 at a point intermediate the waist-line and the upper end of the garment and preferably ad jacent to the shoulders of the garment, as shown in Fig. 1. The flaps c and f, formed by the provision of the opening 0, may be detachably connected in any approved manner without involving a departure from the scope of my invention. I prefer, however, to provide the flap 0 with buttons g for the purpose stated and the flap f with buttonholes it and a flyk, as shown by dotted and full lines in Fig. 1. Like the flaps e and f, the flaps Z and m, formed by the provision of the lateral openings d, may be detachably connected by any suitable means, although I prefer to provide the lower flaps Zwith buttons 79 and the upper flaps m with buttonholes 9*, arranged in the inner walls of flies s, as illustrated.

In virtue of the provision of the openings 0 and (Z in the front of the body portion A and the means for detachably connecting the flaps formed by the said openings it will be observed that the garment may be put on the body with but a minimum amount of eflfort, notwithstanding the fact that the garment is a union one, and when properly positioned on the body the front of the body portion A may be entirely closed throughout its area, so as to effectually exclude dust and dirt from the clothes or person of the wearer. It will also be observed that the openings 0 and d contribute very materially tothe facility with which the garment may be removed from the body, but little effort being required after the several flaps are disconnected to withdraw the arms from the sleeves c and work the portion A off of the body.

In its back at about the waist-line the body portion A is provided with a horizontal opening 26, which extends throughout its width, Fig. 2. This opening 25, in connection withvertical openings a, which extend downwardly from its ends, forms a seat.flap o, and by virtue of the provision of this latter flap the back of the garment may be quickly and easily opened at the seat while the garment is on the body of a person, which is an important desideratum in the art. The seat-flap o may be detachably connected to the body portion A by any suitable means in order to render the back of the body portion normally closed and adapted to exclude dust and dirt from the clothes or person of the wearer. I prefer, however, to effect the detachable connection through the medium of buttons 20 on the flap r, complementary buttonholes 0c in the body portion A immediately above the opening 6, buttons .2 on the inner side of the body portion A at the ends of the opening 2/, and complementary buttonholes 2" in the flap "0 adjacent to the vertical edges thereof. When the flap o is secured in its closed position, it obviously renders the back of the body portion Aclosed throughout, and yet when necessity demands the said flap may be expeditiously unfastened and opened by the wearer of the garment.

Above the opening 6 the back of the body portion A is provided with a strip a of elastic material and a strip 6' of whalebone or other resilient material. These strips a and b are arranged in the longitudinal center of the back and have the same functions as the corresponding parts in the patented device hereinbefore mentionedz'. 0., to render the garment neat-fitting in the back and yet enable the back to give, so as to permit the wearer of the garment to assume a stooping posture with comfort and without liability of tearing the garment. The surplus material necessary in the back of the body portion A is taken up by the resilient strip 6, the lower end of which normally rests in a bight 0' of such material, as clearly shown in Fig. 3, and the said bight, as also best shown in said Fig. 3, normally rests over the buttons complementary to the seat-flap o and hides the upper edge of the said seat-flap and the opening t, with the result that the garment appears at the back as if formed of a continuous unbroken piece of material. It will also be observedthat the normal disposition of the bight 0 over the upper' edge of the seat-flap c and the opening 6 contributes materially toward preventing dust and dirt from finding its way through the said opening 6.

In addition to the material advantages which I have hereinbefore ascribed to my novel garment it will be noticed that the same is inexpensive in construction and is well adapted to withstand the rough usage to which overall garments are ordinarily subjected.

I have entered into a detailed description of the construction and relative arrangement of the parts comprised in the present and preferred embodiment of my invention in order to impart a definite understanding of the said embodiment. Ido not desire, however, to be understood as confining myself to said specific construction and relative arrangement of parts, as such changes or modifications may be made in practice as fairly fall within the scope of my invention as claimed. For instance, it is obvious that in lieu of the buttons and complementary buttonholes shown and described I may employ ball-and-socket fastener membersz'. 6., male and female fastener membersor fastener members of any other type compatible with the purposes of my invention.

An overall garment comprising a body portion and leg portions formed in one piece with the body portion,and having a depending bight extending across the back of its body portion, an elastic strip connected at one end to said bight and at its opposite end to the back of the body portion, a resilient strip connected to the back of the body portion, with its lower end disposed in the bight thereof, a seat-flap in the back of its body portion and arranged with its upper edge normally resting under and covered by the depending bight, and means for detachably connecting the upper edge of the seat-flap to the body portion.
