To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GUSTAV AnoLr PETER- SEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Viborg, in the county of Yankton and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoe- Closures, of which the following is a speciiication.

This invention relates to improvements in shoe closures and its object is to produce a simple form of closure, particularly adapted for use on oXfords, that will enhance the appearance of the shoe and that, if desired, may be entirely obscured when in use.

\Vith the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter fully described in this specification, pointed out in the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawing which forms a part of said specification and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a shoe or oxford provided with my improved closure. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the shoe open. Fig. 3 is a section taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1.

Like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.

The reference numeral 1 designates a shoe in which the upper 2 is opened to the vamp 3 thus forming the flies l and 5. To the fly 5 a piece of leather or similar material 6 is sewed or otherwise suitably secured as at 7, said leather projecting beyond the free edge of the fly and having secured to it a metal plate or look 8 which look is formed along its free edge with notches 9, the notched edge of said lock being of approximately the same length as the free edge of the fly 4. The free edge of the fly 4 on its inner side is provided with the strip 10 having buttons 11 arranged in alinement with the notches of the lock 8.

The lock 8 has one edge 12 that lies upon the leather piece 6 and to fasten the shoe the plate or lock 8 is turned back about this edge and the leather piece 6 folded upon itself along this edge; the fly 4 is now laid upon the flap 5 and the notched edge of plate 8 inserted between the strip 10 and @opiea of this patent may be obtained. for

fly 4 and the buttons 11 of the strip 10 will readily engage with the notched portion 9 of the lock and so retain the flies securely in closed relation. The lock 6 and strip in this position will prevent relative longitudinal movement of the flies thus preserving the neat appearance of the shoe during the walking operation. A buckle 13 may be employed as shown in Figs. 1 and 3 to cooperate with the closure although its use is not essential.

.lVhat is claimed is 1. A shoe having one of its flies provided with a leather piece projected beyond the free edge of the fly and its opposite fly provided with a leather strip along its inner edge, buttons arranged on said strip and a plate carried by said leather piece and formed with notches along its free edge in alinement with the buttons of the said strip, said plate being adapted for insertion between said strip and the fly to which it is secured.

2. A shoe having one of its flies provided with a leather piece projected beyond the free edge of the fly and its opposite fly provided with a leather strip along its inner edge, buttons arranged on said strip and means carried by said leather piece for insertion between said strip and its fly for engagement with the said buttons whereby independent longitudinal movement of the flies is avoided.

3. A. shoe having one of its flies provided with a leather piece projected beyond the free edge of the fly and adapted to be folded back upon itself and its opposite fly provided with a leather strip along its inner edge, buttons arranged on said strip, a plate secured to said leather piece and formed with notches along its free edge in alinement with the buttons of the said strip for engagement with said buttons when said plate is inserted between said strip and its fly, and a buckle carried by said flies.
