UNITED STATEb HENRY ANDREW FAU'IEUX, OF OTTAWA, ONTARIOQCANADA.
SHOE-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 5, 1916.
Application filed June 3, 1916. Serial No. 101,650.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY ANDREW Fnn'rnux, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and resident of the city of Ottawa, Province of Ontario, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoe-Fasteners, of which the following is the specification.
This invention relates to improvements in fasteners particularly adapted for boots or other wearing apparel, and the objects of the invention are to facilitate in securing the fasteners in their relative positions so that the adjacent faces of the material on which the fasteners are secured will intimately engage one another, and generally to adapt the several parts to better perform the functions required of them, and it consists essentially of the improved construction of fastener particularly described and set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawing forming part of the same.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a boot showing the improved fastener mounted thereon. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the male and female members of the fastener. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation of the improved fastener in a closed position. Fig. i is a perspective view of a. male member. Fig. 5 is a transverse section of the improved fastener in a closed position.
Like characters of reference refer to like parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawing, A represents a boot and B the improved fastener mounted thereon.
The fastener B consists of the male and female members 1 and 2, the former of which comprises an elliptical shaped member 3 carrying a concentrically disposed ellipsoidal projection 4- formed integral therewith and having its periphery provided with serrations or teeth 5 adapted to be bent to engage the boot upper.
The female member 2 comprises an elliptical sha 26d member havin curvilinear overhanging walls 6 adapted to engage with the ellipsoidal projection 4- of the male mem her, the female member being secured by means of a rivet to the hollow button 8. In securing the female member to the boot upper, it will be clear that the leather or cloth of the same is pressed into the hollow button 8 so that when the female member 2 1s secured thereto by the rivet the outer face of the said female member will be sub stantially flush with the face of the leather or cloth.
The male member 1 is secured in position by engaging the serrations or teeth 5 with the boot upper and then bending the said serrations so that the male member will be securely locked in position.
By making the male and female members 1 and 2 elliptical in shape, a larger bearing surface is given to the fasteners so that the overlapping edge of the boot upper is not liable to become curled, and at the same time the use of the button 8 lends finish to the article obviating a slovenly appearance otherwise liable to occur when fasteners of this description are utilized, while the female member 2 is arranged so that its outer edge is flush with the face of the material so that when the fastener is in a closed position the adjacent faces of the contacting surface of the boot upper will snugly engage each other. 7
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of my invention, within the scope of the claim, constructed without departing from the spirit or scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained'in the accompanying specification and drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
What I claim as my invention is:
A fastener of the class described comprising a male member having an ellipsoidal projection, a female member having curvilinear overhanging walls adapted to en gage the said projection, a hollow button, a rivet integral with the inner wall of the button adapted to secure the same to the female member and means for securing the said fas tener to a boot as and for the purpose specified.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
HENRY ANDREW FAUTEUX.
