UNITED STATES PATENT @FFICE.
HERBERT N. NORTI-IROP, OF SOMERVILLE, MASSACHUSETTS.
PLACKET- HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION torming part of Letters Patent No. 71 8,018, dated January 6, 1903.
Application filed October 6, 1902.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERBERT N. NORTHROP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Somerville, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Placket-Holders, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is aspecification, like figures on the drawings representing like parts.
In my application filed October 1, 1902, Serial No. 125,571, I have illustrated and described a placket holder comprising two plates or members, one of which has a headed projection extending therefrom and the other of which has a slot through which the headed projection is adapted to be inserted, the head of the projection engaging the back side of the slotted member for the purpose of looking the two together. The shank of the projection is made larger than the slot, and the slot is provided with an enlarged portion adapted to receive the shank, thus preventing the latter from sliding back and forth in the slot when the two members are locked together. In the placket-holder described in the said application the two members are each in the form of fiat plates, and when the two members are locked together the head of the projection extends outwardly from theslotted member and forms a projecting portion which is liable to catch in the garment and which also subjects the garment to more or less Wear.
It is the object of my present invention to give to the members of the placket-holder such a shape that the, head of the projection when the two members are locked together is situated in the plane of the body of the members, whereby all projecting portions are dispensed with. To accomplish this, I have chosen to give to the members of the placketholder a concavo-convex shape and have extended the projection from the concave face of one of the members. With this construction the two members of the placket-holder nest together when in locking position and the head of the projection lies in the concavity of the slotted member.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view showing the manner of applying my improved placket-holder. Fig. 2 is a section through the Serial No. 126,050. (No modelplacket-holder, showing the two parts locked together. Figs. 3 and 4 are separate views of each member, and Fig. 5 is a view showing the way in which the two members are centered before looking them together.
The two members of the placket-holder are designated by 3 and 1, respectively, and each will have some suitable means of securing the same to the garment. The member 3 is provided with the slot- 5, having the enlarged portion 6, and the member 4 has extending laterally therefrom the headed projection comprising the shank portion 7 and the head 8. In order that the head may not protrude beyond the face of the member 3 when. the parts are locked together, I have made the two members in the form of concavo-convex disks, the member 4 having the headed projection ex tending from the concave face thereof.
In the preferred form of my invention the central portion only of the members is concavo-convex and the edges 10 thereof are fiat and are provided with some suitable means for securing them to the garment. The two members are locked together in the same way as described in my above-mentioned application and the shape of the head 8 is such with relation to the concavity of the member 3 that when the members are locked together the said head lies entirely within the concavity, as best seen in Fig. 2. This I consider as quite important, because when the parts are locked together no projecting portions are presented to rub against and wear the garment. As seen in Fig. 2, the garment to which the member3is secured barely touches the head 8, which is received entirely in the .concaved portion of the said member.
somewhat, as shown in Figs. 2 and 5, as this construction assists in centering the members when it is desired to lock them together.
When it is desired to fasten the two members together, the member 4 is placed with relation tothe member 3 as shown in Fig.6, and the rounding edge 11 of the head, by its engagement with the aperture 6, serves to center the two members, so that it is only necessary to turn them relatively to each other to bring the head in alinement with ICO the slot, when by inserting the head through the slot they become locked together.
The headed projection may be made in any suitable way, and in the embodiment of the invention herein shown it is formed by stamping or punching it out from the metal 4 and bending it at right angles thereto. This particular manner of making the projection, however, is not essential, and the invention would not be departed from if the headed projection were made and secured to the member 4 in any other suitable way.
It will be noted that the shank 7, as seen in Fig. 2, is thicker than the width of the narrow portion of the slot 5 and when the parts are locked together is received in the enlarged portion 6 of the slot, as in my abovementioned application. This construction obviously prevents the projection from sliding back and forth in the slot. This relative movement of one member with reference to the other is also prevented by the fact that the member 3 nests into the member 4, owing to the concavo-convex shape.
One of the advantages which results from the peculiar construction herein described is that any strain to which the device is subjected which tends to move the devices laterally one on the other, as when the two pieces of material held together by the holder are subjected to strains which tend to pull them apart, is resisted by the nesting portions of the two members instead of entirely by the shank or neck of the headed projection, as would be the case in the construction set forth in my above-named application. This makes the present form of my invention very much stouter and more serviceable than where the disks or members are flat. Another advantage inherent in this structure is that the two members when locked together nest closely together and take up a minimum amount of room, as seen in Fig. 2.
While one particular way of embodying my invention has been herein illustrated, it is obvious that the invention may be embodied in other constructions not shown, and I therefore desire to reserve to myself the privilege of making all changes that come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim asnew, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A placket-holder comprising two concavo-convex members, one of which has a slot and the other a headed projection to engage the slot.
2. A placket-holder comprising two concavo-convex members, one of said members having a slot and the other having a projection extending from the concaved face thereof, said projection being constructed to engage the slot whereby when the two members are locked together the head of the projection is received in the concavity of the slotted member.
3. A placket-holder comprising two members having concavo-convex portions, one of said members having a slot provided with an enlarged portion and a headed projection extending from the concave face of the other member, the shank of the projection being larger than the slot, and when the members are locked being received in the enlarged portion of the slot.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HERBERT N. NORTHROP.
