CORSET AND FASTENING THEREFOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 616.503, dated December 27, 1898.
Application filed November 20, 1897- Serial No. 659,219. (No model.)
To all whom it rnctg concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB M. STEINHARDT, a citizen of the United States, residingat Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corsets and Fastenings Therefor; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to that class of corsets in which the front clasps or catches are adapted to be simultaneously released, where by the corset may be removed with greater facility and ease and without the inconvenience to the wearer heretofore common, especially where the wearer is of fleshy habit, and to secure other advantages and results, some of which may be referred to hereinafter in connection with the description of the working parts.
The invention consists in the improved corset, in the fastenings therefor, and in the arrangements and combinations of parts, all substantially as will be hereinafter set forth and finally embraced in the clauses of the claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each of the several views, Figure l is a front elevation of a portion of a corset of myimproved construction. Fig. 2 is a section of the same on line m, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail of one of the busks or steels of the corset, showing a fastener or clasp thereon open. Fig. 4 is a section taken on line a of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a section taken on line '11 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a plan of one of the members of the clasp or fastener in blank. Fig. 6 is a similar plan of the same complete. Fig. 7 is an end view of the same; and Fig. 8 is a plan showing the interior of one of the plates of a cooperating clasping fastening member, showing a groove therein to receive the first said member.
In said drawings, a a indicate portions of the side parts comprising the body of a corset, the edges of which meet and are fastened together at the front of the wearer. I) Z; are steels arranged at the front meeting edges of said side parts, said steels beinginclosed in pockets formed in the textile body fabric in any ordinary manner, and c c are studs arranged upon one-of said steels to serve as catches to receive the cooperating clasps, fasteners, or catches upon the opposite steel, the said cooperating catches embodying more particularly the features of novelty involved in my invention. Of said cooperating catches,d d are two plates of approximately annular form in generaloutline, with ears (1 which are perforated and are adapted to receive the rivets e, by means of which said plates are firmly joined together and fastened to the husk or steel 1), the said plates cl being preferably of uniform shape and uniformly grooved interiorly to form between said plates when said plates are brought together face to face, as in Fig. 4, an annular or approximately annular chamber (1 Said plates are also centrally open, as at C1 and slotted, as at d, the slot extending out from the central opening 6Z through the periphery of the plates, and said slots being of suflicient width to permit the outpassage of the shank ofthe studs 0 when unfastening the corset.
. Between said plates (1 d is arranged a leverlike catching memberf, which consists of an annular portion f and a shankj' the annular portion being slotted, as at f, at a point approximately opposite the shank, and the slot being adapted to be brought into coincidence with the slot d in the plates 62 when it is desired to unloosen the corset.
Between the ears or lugs d d the plates d are interiorly recessed, and the groove (1 is open at the back, as at al Figs. 2 and 4:, through which opening the shank f extends, as indicated in Fig. 3, the ends of said slot terminating at the ears 61 which latter serve as stops, and thus limit the movement of the shank f The extremity of the shank f is provided with a pivotal extension f, which is preferably integral with the shank and bent up, as indicated in Figs. 6 and 7, and thus adapted to enter through slot h in a draft rod or strap 71, arranged longitudinally along the face of the steel 12 back of the plates cl cl, the said slots 72, permitting a freedom of n10vement of the pivotal extensions f that there will be no binding of parts. The said pivotal extensions are preferably formed,as indicated in Fig. 5, integral with the lever-like catching memberfand bent laterally; but independent pivots may be employed.
The annular part f of the catching member f fits nicely within the groove or chamber formed between the plates (1' 01, so as to turn concentrically therein without any looseness of movement. By simply drawing upon the draft-rod t', to which the several levers are pivoted and which is provided with fingerrings or other suitable handpieces j for the purpose, the shanks of the said levers are drawn upward or downward and the annular parts turned within the slots, the movement being limited by the ears (2, so as to bring the slots f into coincidence with the slots f to permit the outpassage of the studs or to close the said passage (1 by throwing the slot f out of coincidence with the slot (1, as will be understood.
At the back face of the steels l) I prefer to place a second strip on to reinforce the steels and prevent breakage and the consequent interference with a proper operation of the fastening parts. The metallic strips 2', b, and m are preferably held face to face in one pocket of the textile body fabric.
In'operating the device to release the corset the wearer simply draws upon one end of the rod or strip i to turn the lever in its bearings, and the openings or slots f (Z are brought into coincidence and the studs are permitted to pass out. Afterward the levers are turned back and out of coincidence, when keyhole-slots are formed in the clasps or fasteners, permitting the corset to be fastened upon the wearer, one fastener being caught after another in the usual manner.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new isl. The combination with the plates 61, having slots d and interior annular grooves 61 said plates being fastened together forming a chamber, of a lever f, having a slotted annular part inclosed in said chamber, and an arm or extension with a laterally-turned pivotal end, and a draft-rod having transverse slots to receive said laterally-turned pivotal end and at opposite ends having finger-pieces,substantially as set forth.
The combination in a corset,of the plates (1', d, of uniform shape, each having a slot or passage d, and a groove coinciding with the opposite groove to form a chamber 61 and a lever having a slotted annular portion arranged in said chamber and an extension f projecting out from between the plates and at its extremity having means for engagement with a draft-rod, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination in a corset,of the plates (1, d, of annular shape with slots or passages d at one side, ears (Z (1 at the opposite side, and interiorly with an interior chamber (Z and an opening d ,the last terminating at said ears, and a lever having a slotted annular portion arranged in said chamber, and extension f arranged in said opening (1 and projecting out from said slot and having means for engagement with a draft-rod, said lever being limited in its movement by said ears, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination with the plates 01, cl, placed flatwise together and having coinciding slots forming a passage for the stud c, the contiguous faces of said plates being provided with annular grooves forming an interior chamber and said interior chamber having an edge opening (1 of a leverf, havinga slotted annular part lying in the said interior chamber, and an extension f projecting out through the said edge opening (1 substantially as set forth.
5. The combination in a corset-fastener of a casing secured to the bush and having an interior chamber, a keyhole-slot opening away from said bush and an edge aperture opening toward said busk, and a lever having one end lying in said interior chamber and being adapted to close the throat of said keyholeslot and the other end projecting through the said edge aperture and being limited thereby in its motion, substantially as set forth.
6. The combination in a corset-fastener of a casing fastened to the bush and having an interior chamber, a keyhole-slot opening away from said busk and an edge aperture opening toward said busk, a lever having a slotted annular part lying in said chamber and an arm extending out through said edge aperture, said arm having a lateral extension forming a T-shaped connecting member, and a draft-rod having transverse slots which receive said T-shaped connecting member and allow pivotal motion therein and movement from end to end of the slot, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 13th day of November, 1897.
JACOB M. STEINIIARDT.
