'0. E. LEWIS. 81F. G. BRIEGEL.
PASTENER FOR SHOES.
Patented Apr. 1-2, 1 887.
I WITNESSES UNITED ST TES PATENT OFFICE. I
CHARLES E. LEl/VIS AND FRED. G. 'BRIEGEL, OF MANCHESTER, MICHIGAN;
FASTENER FOR SHOES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 361,166, dated April 12, 1887.
Application filed January 29, 1887. Serial No. 225,909. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, CHARLES E. LEwIs and FRED. G. BRIEGEL, of Manchester, county of Washtenaw, State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fasteners for Shoes and Analogous Articles; and We declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled inthe art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention consists of the combinations of devices and appliances hereinafter specified, and more particularly pointed out in the claims, and has for its object a novel fastening for overshoes and analogous articles.
In the drawings, Figure 1 illustrates said fastening applied to an overshoe. Figs. 2 and 3 are separate views of the clasp.
In the drawings, A represents the shoe, preferably constructed with a flexible piece at the instep, as shown at a, the outer part of the shoe being open across the instep, as shown at a B is a strap engaged upon the overshoe at one end, and provided, preferably, with a series of perforations, b, on the free end.
0. is a clasp, constructed, preferably, with a spring-base, O, and a stationary leaf, 0 both of which are engaged upon the shoe in any particular manner-as, for instance, by
rivets c.
C is a stud or post engaged with the leaf 0, preferably midway of its extremities and sides, and adapted to enter the perforations b of the strap B. This base-leaf O is open at each end laterally across the shoe, to permit the strap B being adjusted to any desired position thereon, so that the shoe may be adjusted to the foot of the wearer, the two open ends of said base-leaf permitting said strap to pass across and project beyond the leaf. The upper edge of the leaf is preferably flanged, as shown at c.
D is a movable leaf hinged upon the baseleaf, as shown at d, and perforated midway its .ends and sides, so as to project over and upon the stud C to inclose the strap between the said leaves and prevent the disengagement of the strap from said stud, thereby affording a firm fastening.
The leaf may be readily held in any given location by extending its lower edge, as shown at (1, so as to form frictional contact upon the spring base-plate G, which is preferably extended at its lower end so as to be flush with the adjacent edges of the upper leaf when engaged upon said stud. This frictional contact securely holds the leaf D open when in that position, and also holds said leaf in a closed position when adjusted upon the stud to prevent any accident-al disengagement therefrom. The flange o closes the upper side of the fastener when the leaf D is engaged upon the stud.
What is claimed is 1. A buckle or clasp consisting of a springbase, 0, a stationary leaf, 0", provided with an upward-turned flange, 0, and a central post or stud, C and a perforated leaf, D,
hinged to said stationarylleaf, and provided with a turned-over edge or flange, d, in frictional contact with the spring-base, said hinged and perforated leaf being adapted to shut down over and around the stud O and with its edge at flush with the end of the spring-base, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with a shoe or other a buckle or clasp consisting of the spring-base O, the stationary leaf 0*, having upturned flange c and stud O and the hinged and perforated leaf D, having one end in frictional contact with the spring-base and adapted to close down on said flange and stud, said clasp .being open laterally to permit the adjustment article provided with a perforated strap, B, of
