LACING FOR GARM ENTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 743,069, dated November 3, 1903.
Application filed October 14, 1897. Serial No. 655,168. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CALVIN E. FOSBURGH,
r of the city of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and
State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Lacings for Garments, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to a lacing for garments, having for its object the providing of means for quickly and easily lacing together two contiguous sections of a garment and at the same time for providing a means which shall not cause the garment to present an unsightly appearance.
I will describe an article embodying my improvement and then point out the 'novel features in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a shoe having my improvement embodied in it. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the shoe-opening. Fig. 3 is a detail view in perspective of one of the fas tenors.
Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures.
A designates a shoe, which may be of any suitable construction, except that it has an opening a, which is closed and secured by a lace B. Inside the two edges a a of the opening a. are strips 0' 0 preferably of leather. These strips need only be fastened along or close to the inner edge, so as to leave the upper of the shoe along the edges a a? extending'outside and slightly beyond it as flaps. The strips 0 C have fitted to them fasteners D, comprised of a suitable frame, which may be in the form of an eye or boxlike portion (1, which are preferably provided with'pulleys d and flat portions d provided with prongs (1 whereby they may be secured to-the strips C 0 The pulleys d are mounted on a journal or rivet (1 secured to the upper and lower plates of the fastener in the eye or box-like part thereof. Laces or a lace pass around the pulleys and through the pulleys, so as to cross the opening a of the shoe. By pulling on these laces the side edges of the opening a may be drawn together and secured. This may be done very quickly, because there will be no appreciable friction.
In the construction shown in the figures the fastening device supporting the pulley is formed of a single strip of metal slit at holes to permit of securing them by stitching. The doubled portion forms the receptacle or box-like part in which the pulley is mounted, and the extremities of the doubled portion may terminate in claws or prongs 01 for securing the fastener to the fabric on which it is mounted.
So far as the fasteners here described are novel in construction they may of course be applied to the outside of ashoe-opening, and it is desired to cover such a use of them. Obviously the improvement may be applied to any article of wearing-apparel, especially where a tight closure is desired.
What is claimed as new isp 1. The combination with an article of wearing-apparel having an opening, of a lace for securing the edges of said opening, strips attached inside the edges, and fasteners each having two extremities, one attached to one of the strips, and the other to one of the edges of said opening, and a pulley on each fastener for guiding the lace, said pulley being between said points of attachment.
2. The combination, with an article of wearing-apparel having an opening, of means for securing said opening, including a fastener having, at one extremity, means for securing one surface of said fastener to the under surface of a portion of said wearingapparel, and, at the other extremity claws adapted to holdbetween them another portion of said article of wearing-apparel, and a pulley located between the said securing means and independent thereof, for guiding the lace.
