Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed May 12, 1910. Serial No. 560,813.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTUR ZEHL, a subject of the German Emperor, residing at Leisnig, Saxony, in Germany, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Shoes, of which the following is a specification.
This invent-ion relates to button-hole stays for boots and shoes, of the class in which the stay is an elastic stiffening member, usually of wire, inserted between the buttonholes, and the edge of the button-hole flap.
One object of the invention is to provide means whereby a stay ofithis class can be readily inserted after the shoe has been finished in other respects. This device enables the upper to be stretched and otherwise treated, for finishing purposes, after the sewing, in a manner which is impossible after the insertion and fastening of the stay.
Another object of the invention is to provide a button-hole stay which is specially well adapted for insertion in the manner to which I have referred, and which possesses good qualities of strength, and elasticity when so inserted.

The stay 1 shown in the drawing consists of two coiled springs linked together and pressed fiat. This stay is pushed into the hem made by folding over the edge of the upper leather 3. The curved or undulating sides of the stay enable same to slide easily into the hem, there being no liability to 1 catch, and the springs have sufficient stitfness for this purpose, combined with very considerable elasticity and strength.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 18 The combination with a shoe upper, the material of which is folded back to form a hem at the edge of the button hole flap, of a stay inserted into said hem, said stay consisting of coiled springs linked together and pressed flat.
