Description
June 7, 1932. w. C. MANKE 1,861,704
PANTS 0R OVERALL BOTTOM Filed May 5. 1931 gyn/vento@ Patented June 7, 1932 UNITE STATS FlCE WILLIAM C. MANKE, OF TRACY, MINNESOTA PANTS OR OVERALL BOTTOM This invention relates to the class of clothing and pertains particularly to improvements in the bottom construction of the legs of pants or overalls.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide a bifurcated garment of the above described character with means for fastening the bottoms thereof tight-ly about the ankles so as te prevent dust and dirt 1G entering and also to hold the same tight to stop the usual annoying apping of the bottoms thereof.
The invention broadly contemplates the provision of overalls or pants in which the l saine are cut obliquely from the bottoms thus forming a V opening therein, with fastening means for securing the edges of this opening together so that the bottom opening will be of substantially half the size of the usual 2U opening.
The invention will be best understood from a consideration of the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing forming a part of the present invention with the understanding, however, that the invention is not confined to any strict conformity with the showing of the drawing but may be changed or modified so long as such changes or modifications mark so no material departure from the salient features of the invention as expressed in the appended claim.
In the drawing Figure l is a view in elevation of a pair of trousers showing the bottoms there-of constructed in accordance with the present invention;
Figure 2 is a view of the lower portion of a leg of the trousers showing the same opened.
Referring more particularly to the drawing wherein like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the present invention is here illustrated as applied to a pair of overalls one leg of which is indicated by the numeral 1.
In carrying out my invention each leg of the garment is out away obliquely preferably from the front rearwardly and downwardly 53 through the bottom 2 thereof and thus forming in the front of the leg when the same is flattened out, as in Figure 2, an opening 3 which is in the form of an inverted V. Along each edge of the opening 3 there is secured one of fastener. these elements converging at the top of the opening and being joined by the usual connector element 5 by means of which the elements 4 are joined together.
When the trousers or overalls are put on E the bottoms thereof are open in the manner shown in Figure 2 and after the foot has been extended through the bottom the element 5 of the fastening device is drawn downwardly so as to draw the edges of the 653 opening 3 together and thereby drawing in and 'tightening the lower edge of the bottom about the ankle.
From the foregoing it will be readily seen that by forming the legs of trousers or overalls in this manner and providing means whereby the edges of the opening may be drawn together, the bottoms may be secured tightly about the ankles and sufficient room is provided for other trousers which may be worn beneath the overalls, without causing bulkiness.
It will also be appreciated that with trousers or overalls constructed in accordance with this invention farmers and other persons working out of doors will be able to keep dust and dirt from entering the bottoms thereof and in addition to this the gai'- ments so constructed are particularly useful to machinists or others working about ma- 'l chinery as it does away with the usual flapping wide bottom which is so apt to become engaged in moving parts of machinery and cause serious injury to the wearer. In order to facilitate the opening and closing of the fastening device there are secured to the lower ends of the fastening elements 4, to extend from the edges of the opening 3 at the bottom, tapes or tabs 6. These may be grasped in order to hold the elements of the k fastener together while the sliding member or runner 5 is being moved up or down for the opening or closing of the trousers leg.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 109 the elements 4 of a sliding (i5 A bifurcated garment of the character described having an opening cut in the bottoms thereof in the form of an inverted V having the apex at the front andextending, when viewing the garment in side elevation, beyond the longitudinal center thereof, fastening means extending throughout the edges of said opening for drawing the said edges togeth'er to close the opening tightly about the ankle of a wearer, and tabs constituting eX- tensions of portions of said means, projecting beyond the bottom edges of said opening for facilitating manually holding o the edges while said fastening means is being operated.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature.
WILLIAM C. MANKE.
