Turner, Jr., Lynchburg, Va., assiwor to N & W Industries, Inc., Lynehburg, Va., a corporation of Virginia Application July 1, 1954, Serial No. 440,697 1 Claim. (Cl. 2--227) This invention relates to a trouser leg construction and more specifically provides an improved device for contracting lower portions of the tubular legs of garments worn around machinery wherein the lower tubular leg portion of the garment will closely surround the leg of the wearer for preventing entanglement of the leg portion of the garment with the machinery.
An object of this invention is to provide an improved trouser leg construction that is simple yet effective in gathering the tubular lower portion of a trouser leg about the leg of the wearer in a neat and safe position.
Another object of this invention is to provide a trouser leg construction including improved means for contracting the lower portion of the leg and also providing ventilation means for permitting the circulation of air around the leg of the wearer thereby providing the usual circulating air and comfort to the legs of the wearer.
Still another important object of the present invention is to provide a trouser leg construction having an improved slide fastener for constructing the lower portion of the leg and which does not provide the usual bulkiness as the slide fastener is secured to the outer surface of the tubular portion of the leg wherein the tubular portion of the leg is continuous about its entire periphery and the addition of the slide fastener does not effect the construction of the leg portion of the trousers.
Still another important feature of the present invention is to provide a trouser leg construction conformable to the previous objects and also having the advantage of a neat appearance and a protective cover so that the longevity of the constricting means for the trouser leg will be assured.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure l is a side elevational view of the trouser leg construction of the present invention showing the ventilation means;
Figure 2 is a side elevational view taken from the opposite side of the trouser leg of Figure 1 showing the constricting or contracting slide fastening means;
Figure 3 is a detail, sectional View taken substantially upon a plane passing along section line 33 of Figure 1 showing the details of construction of the ventilating apertures together with the reticulated member therein;
Figure 4 is a top plan sectional view taken substan tially along section line 4-4 of Figure 2 showing the structural detail of the trouser leg construction together with the constricting slide fastener; and
Figure 5 is a top plan section similar to Figure 4 with the slide fastener in closed position wherein the cross sectional area of the lower portion of the trouser leg is constricted.
Referring now specifically to the drawings, it will be seen that the numeral generally designates the lower or culf portion of a trouser leg construction of the present invention. The trouser leg 10 is constructed of a pair of cloth members 12 and 14 that are stitched together along their longitudinal edges as indicated by the numeral 16 thereby forming a circular or tubular trouser leg 10.
While the trouser leg construction of the present invention may be utilized in any type of trouser, it is especiaily adaptable for use in overalls wherein heavy denim is used as a material. On the forward member 12 is provided a plurality of apertures 18 together with a reinforcing strip extending adjacent thereto wherein a tubular member 22 is inserted through the opening 18 and includes flanges 24 and 26 that secure the tubular member 22 thereto with the edges of the opening 18 clasped therebetween. The outer end of the tubular member 22 is provided with a reversely bent portion 23 having a reticulated screen 30 therein wherein ventilation is provided through the trouser leg 10. Secured to the rear member 14 is a pair of slide fastener tapes 32 having cooperating hooks 34 on the facing edges and a slide fastener 36 for attaching and detaching the cooperating hooks 34-. The tapes 32 are positioned in diverging relation wherein their normal position form substantially a triangle with the apex of the triangle forming the juncture of the slide fastener tapes 32. A covering of the material 38 is provided with reversely bent edges 40 and the covering 38 and the tape 32 are secured to the member 14 by suitable stitching 42. It will be seen that the tubular circumference of the trouser leg 10 is uninterrupted by the attachment of the slide fastener tape 32 thereby providing a smooth interior surface. When the slide fastener 36 is moved downwardly to the bottom edge of the trouser leg 10, the portion of the member 14 between the fastener tapes 32 is folded over as indicated by the numeral 44. As shown in Figure 5, the covering 38 overlaps thereby providing a neat and smooth appearance to the trouser leg construction 10. It will be seen that the apertures 13 provide adequate ventilation and the means for contracting the lower portion of the leg 10 is easily attached to conventional trouser legs and eliminate much of the bulkiness normally found wherein slide fastening means of this type is utilized.
From the foregoing, the construction and operation of the device Will be readily understood and further explanation is believed to be unnecessary. However, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction shown and described, and accordingly, all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
A trouser leg construction comprising a contractable tubular portion normally having substantially a uniform cross-sectional area in uncontracted form, a pair of slide fastener tapes secured to the outer surface of the tubular member in downwardly diverging relation and terminating at their upper ends in intersecting relation, said tapes having cooperating hooks and a slide to engage and disengage the hooks for contracting the tubular portion to snugly embrace the wearers leg, and means fixing the tapes to the tubular portion against the outer surface thereof, thereby leaving intact the continuity of the tubular portion completely about its periphery for providing a smooth inner surface on the tubular portion, said tubular portion being provided with openings spaced above the contractable portion for providing ventilation for the wearers leg when the tubular portion is contracted, and reticulated members in said openings for permitting the passage of air.
