This invention relates to closure devices for the pockets of garments.

Referring to the drawings, the main fabric material of a pair of overalls is designated by the numeral 7. Applied to the side of the left trouser leg of the overalls, in accordance with the usual practice, there is provided a patch pocket 8 formingthe pocket within which a carpenter usually keeps his rule,pencil etc; The pocket 8 is composed of fabric and is secured to the garment fabric material 7 of the overalls at its bottom by a line of stitching 9 and is secured at its two sides to the material 7 by double parallel lines of stitching 10 and 11 respectively. The strip 13 is secured to the fabric 7 by I suitable stitching or the like, and in particular, is secured to the fabric 7 by groups of spaced parallel lines of stitching 14 running in. substantially a horizontal plane and set 'at substantially right angles relative to the lines 10 of stitching. Adjacent lines of stitching 14 together with portions of the fabric 13 and portions of the fabric 7 form open ended channels 15 extending above the pocket 8 and at substantially right angles to the channelf12. v

A rod or wire 16 is provided having .a vertical shank portion 16a which fits within the channel 12. The shank portion of the rod 16* extends above the channel 15 and the rod is then bent laterally outwardly and reversely bent inwardly on itself to form a bearing portion 16b and a pivot-portion 160. The pivot portion 160 extends substantially at right anglesto the shank portion 16a and laterally beyond the side edge of the. strip 13 remote from the bearing portion 16b, whereupon the rod is againfbent on itself to form a second bearing portion 16d and a short end portion 16@ extending downwardly and parallel to the shank portion 16a,

Secured to the shank portion 16a adjacent its upper end and to the end portion 166 of the rod are a pair of apertured and spaced ears 17 which are disposed adjacent the two side edges of the strip 13 in substantially hori- These ears 17 are also adapted to be disposed in alinement with any one of the channels 15. .A removable pin 18 extends through the apertures in the two ears 17 and through one of the channels 15 .to hold the rod 16 sit) in place on the overalls. In order that the pin 18 may not be removed from the cars 17 and from a channel 15 except when desired, a short spring 19 is provided which is secured to the shank portion 16a adjacent its upper end and is hooked around the adjacent ear 17 and bears against the pin 18 to exert friction against the pin. A plate 20 is provided and this plate has narrow side flanges terminating at their upper ends in apertured ears 20a through which the bearing portions 16?) and 16d respectively of the rod 16 project. The plate 20 also has an in'turned flange 20 at its upper edge above the pivot portion 160 of the rod. A coil spring 21 is mounted on the pivot portion 16-0 of the rod and is anchored at one end to the under or inner side of the plate 20 and is anchored at its other end to the shank portion 16a of the rod. The spring 21 exerts pressure to hold the plate 20 swung inwardly against the upper portion of the outer side of the aocket 8.

In use, t e plate 20 may be swung upwardly from the full. line position illustrated in Fig. 3 to the dotted line position shown therein, whereupon tools and the like may be readily inserted within the pocket. When the plate 20 is released, it will be swung downwardly against the upper end of the outer side of the pocket by the action of the spring 21, so that the open upper end of the pocket will be closed both by the main portion of the plate 20 and by the flange 20?) thereof to prevent tools or other articles carried in the pocket from falling out as the wearer of the garment bends over. The closure device can be readily removed from the garment to permit laundering of the same by merely withdrawing the pin and carrying the shank portion 160, of the rod 16 out of the channel 12. The closure device can be raised or lowered, so as to permit insertion of the pin 18 through any one of the channels 15 and, accordingly, the closure device can be adjusted to permit long or short tools to be carried and retained in place within the pocket.

Although the present device is primarily intended for use on workmens overalls and the like, it can be applied for use to close any type of pocket on any garment. The device is simple in construction, can be quickly and readily applied to a garment and is easily removed therefrom and ad-- justable thereon. It has been successfully demonstrated in actual practice.

It will, of course, be understood that various changes may be made in the form, details, arrangement and proportions of the various parts without departing from the scope of the present invention.

What is claimed is 1. A closure device for the pocket of a fabric garment comprising, a pivot member,

means for releasably securing said pivot member to the garment adjacent the open end of the pocket, a plate pivoted to said pivot member and a spring urging said plate against the garment adjacent the open end of the pocket to clamp against articles contained in the pocket and close the open end of the same. v

2. A pocket for a garment comprising, a substantially rectangular strip of fabric secured to the garment at three edges and forming channel with the garment at an edge adjoining its unsecured edge, a rod having a shank portion fitting within said channel and having bearing portions above the free edge of said strip, means for releasably securing said rod to said garment, a closure plate pivoted to said bearingportions and a spring acting against said closure plate to urge the same against said garment and toward the unsecured edge of said strip.

3. A pocket for a garment comprising, a substantially rectangular strip of fabric secured to the garment at its two side edges and bottom and forming at one side adjacent its unsecured edge a channel with the garment, a strip forming a channel with the garment above said first mentioned strip, a rod having a shank portion fitting within said first mentioned channel and having bearing portions extending above said first mentioned strip and at substantially right angles to said shank portion, a closure plate pivoted to the bearing portions of said rod and normally extending downwardly toward the upper portion of said first mentioned strip and against said garment, a pair of retaining members carried by said rod adjacent the two ends of said second mentioned channel, a pin inserted through said retaining members and said second mentioned channel. and a spring urging said plate downwardly against said garment.

means for exerting friction against said pin to prevent unwarranted removal of the same from said retaining members and said second mentioned channel.

5. The structure defined in claim 3, said cover plate having an inturned flange at its upper edge above the bearlng portlons of' said rod.

6. A pocket for a garment comprising, a substantially rectangular strip of fabric scoured to the garment at its two side edges,

and bottom and forming at one side edge a channel with the garment, a strip of fabric secured to said garment above the end of said first mentioned strip and forming a channel with the garment above said first mentioned channel and having a pivot first mentioned strip, said last mentioned portion extending above said first mentioned strip and at substantially right angles to saidshank portion, a closure plate pivoted to said pivot portion, a pair of spaced ears carried by said rod at the two ends of said second mentioned channel, a pin inserted through said ears and said second mentioned channel and a spring urging said plate downwardly toward the upper end of said first mentioned strip to clamp against said garment.

7. A pocket for a garment comprising, a substantially rectangular strip of fabric secured to the garment at its two side edges and bottom and forming at one side edge a channel with the garment, a strip of fabric secured to said garment above the end of said first mentioned strip and forming with the garment a plurality of spaced channels above said first mentioned strip and extending at substantially right angles to said first mentioned channel, a rod having a shank portion fitting within said first mentioned channel and having a pivot portion extending above said first mentioned strip and at substantially right angles to said shank portion, a closure plate pivoted to said pivot portion of said rod, a pair of spaced ears carried by said rod and adapted to be disposed in alinement with any one of said second mentioned channels, a pin inserted through said ears and one of said second mentioned channels and a spring urging said plate dowwardly toward the upper'end of said first mentioned strip to clamp against said garment.

8. The structure defined in claim 6, and
