My. 711MM .-a is fli-zvrlzg Patented June 5, 1928.
WILLIAM VQMCNAMARA, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
SUSPENDERS.
Application filed August 4, 1927. Serial No. 210,570.
This invention relates generally to supporters but more particularly to improvements in the suspenders for mens trousers.
One of its objects is the provision of a simple, inexpensive and durable suspender which is so designed that its elastic portions are remote from the perspiration points of the body, thereby prolonging the life of the suspender.
Another object of the invention is to provide a suspender of this character with renewable elastic inserts or sections together with simple and reliable means for detachably connecting them to the straps of the suspender.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a front View of my improved suspender in position on the body of the wearer. Figure 2 is an enlarged front view of the suspender. Figure 3 is a perspective view of one of the elastic inserts. 4 is a detailed sectional face view of one of the elastic inserts and the means for fastening it to the suspender. edge view of one of the insert-attaching loops in its open or uncoupled position. Figure 6 is a perspective view of the locking sleeve for the attaching loop.
Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
My invention is applicable to any type of suspender, that shown in the drawings, by way of example, consisting of shoulder straps 10, 10 of inelastic material which are joined at their rear ends to the tie piece 11 and extend diagonally across the back of the wearer, while their front ends are free. At
their front and rear ends these shoulder straps are provided with suitable trouser-engaging fasteners 12.
Interposed between the connected rear ends of the suspender straps and the corresponding trouser fastener and between the front ends thereof and the companion fasteners are elastic inserts 13 which are detachable and reversible and which can be readily and conveniently replaced by the wearer for new ones when desired. These inserts are loop-shaped in form and are detachably connected at their opposite ends to suitable fastening devices which are de- Figure Figure 5 is a top signed to be easily disconnected for the purpose of inserting and removing said inserts. The fasteners. 14 which are attached to front and rear ends of the shoulder straps are preferably in the form of locking loops made of spring steel wire or other appropriate material, the lower portion of each of which is split to form a pair of opposing yieldable jaws 15 which are normally deflected or bent outwardly in the manner shown in Figure 5 for readily eii'ecting the insertion or removal of the looped inserts by passing the same edgewise through the gap between the jaws in an obvious manner.
"ihese jaws are held in their closed or locked position by a sliding sleeve 16'which is adapted to frictionally engage them, the free ends of thejaws being urged constant- .ly against the bore of the sleeve to prevent accidental displacement thereof. By sliding the sleeve to one side or the other of the split ends of the locking loop, the separation of its jaws is automatically efi'ected.
Similar locking loops 17 are attached to the trouser-engaging fasteners 12 for perinitting the insertion and removal of the other ends of the looped inserts 13. These loops may be provided at their lower sides with integrally-formed auxiliary loops 18 for conveniently attaching them to the trouser-engaging fasteners 12.
Aside from its simplicity and practical construction, this improved suspender will outwear any other now on the market; its elastic inserts may be readily applied and removed by the wearer and they are located remote from the usual perspiration points of the body, thus prolonging their extent of usefulness; and furthermore, by disposing the elastic inserts in' the manner shown in the drawings the suspenders hold the trousers in a perfect hanging position.
I claim as my invention A fastener of the character described, comprising a substantially rectangularshaped split loop, the free end portions of the loop being bent out ofthe plane thereof. to form yieldable jaws, and a sleeve slidably mounted on the loop for frictional engagementwith said jaws.
