GARMENT GLOSURE Original Filed May 25. 1922 @Nor 'new Patented @et 30, 1923..
Muere JOHN JAMES PHELAN, OF WEEHAWKEII, NEW JERSEY.
GARMENT CLOSURE.
Application filed May 25, 1922, Serial No.
To @ZZ fr/tom t may concern: 4
Be 1t known that I, JoHN JAMES PHELAN,
a citizen of the United States of America,
residing at Weehawken, in the county ofl Hudson and State of New Jersey, have inw vented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment Closures, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in garment closures and has particular reference to that type of closure wherein garment sections are secured together by buttons or other' fastening devices with a flap or fly of material overlying the fastening devices, and embodies the provision of an additional flap or strip interposed between the button-hole strip and the outer ily or flap.
An illustrative form of the invention is disclosed herein showing the improvement applied to a iiyor front closure for a pair of trousers wherein one side section of the fly opening carries a button-hole strip and an overlying fla-p with an intervening flap secured to the outer edge of the button-hole strip to hide the buttons from view when the garment or fly is fastened.
lilith the above general objects in view ann others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings forming a part of this application and in which like designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the Several views:
Fig. l is a fragmentary perspective view of the front waist portion of a pair of trousers showing the inner and outer flaps of the fly section with the guard ply for the button-hole strip carried by the outer flap.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal detail sectional view showing the guard ply or strip carried by the outer fla-p overlapping` the buttons when the garment llaps are connected, and
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary longitudinal sectional view showing the garment ilaps connected.
Referring more in detail to the accompanying drawing, it being understood that the invention more particularly refers to a 563,596. Renewed September 25, 1923.
garment closure wherein means is provided for shielding or hiding buttons orI other fastening devices of the closure, there is shown, for illustrative purposes only, a pair of trousers designated. by the reference numeral l having a waist fly portion embodying an inner flap 2 and an outer flap 3. The upper ends of the flap sections 2 and 3 carry separable hook members of ordinary construction, a metallic keeper plate l being secured to the outer side of the inner flap 2, while a metal hook 5 is secured to the inner face of the outer flap 3 for engagement with said keeper. The inner flap 2 is provided with a series of spaced buttons 6 secured thereon in any suitable manner to be engaged by a button-hole strip carried by the outer flap 3.
The outer flap 3 is shown more clearly in Fig. 2, has a button-hole strip 7 secured to the inner face thereof at the point 8, the strip 7 being provided with spaced buttonholes 9 to receive the buttons G as illustrated. To hide the buttons 6 from view at all times, and especially when the outer flap 3 is moved outwardly of the button-hole strip 7 as Shown in Fig. 2, a fabric strip l0 is secured as at ll to the button-hole strip 7 adjacent the outer free edge thereof, the strip l0 being stitched as at l2 to the button-hole strip at opposite sides of the button-holes 9 for the purpose of maintaining the shield or protecting strip l() properly positioned relative to the button-holes 9.
In using a garment closure of this type, the buttons 6 may be readily positioned through the button-hole openings 9 without the necessity of displacing the shield strip l0 laterally of the button-hole openings, the flaps 2 and 3 being easily and quickly connected and disconnected. It will be understood that should the outer flap 3 move outwardly relative to the button-hole strip 7 as shown in Figures l and 2, the shield strip l0 secured to the outer edge of the button hole strip and at spaced points at its inner edge overlie the buttons 6 at all times and completely hide the same from view, thereby providing a neater garment closure with the fastening' devices therefor completely hidden from view. It is also to be understood that the garment illustrated herein only suggests one application of the device, it being intended that such a closure may be Cil and a shield strip overlying the button-holes and secured to the free edge ofthe buttonhole strip. y, ,Y
2. In a garment overlapping connected flaps, spaced buttons secured to one of the iiaps, a button-hole strip having one edge secured to the inner face of the other Hap, and a shield strip overlying the button-holes and secured to the free edge of the buttonhole strip, the shield strip being stitched to the button-hole strip adjacent its `free edge at points intermediate the button-holes.
In testimony whereof I afiX my signature.
