Description

Aug 1934 s. v. P. QUACKENBUSH GARMENT Filed March 18, 1953 Patented Aug. 28, 1934 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
This invention relates to garments, particularly outer garments, and more particularly it pertains, to a new and novel closure for outer garments such as coats, jackets and the like.
5 The invention contemplates a new and novel use of the separable fastener known as the runway engaging type.
I am fully aware that outer garments such as coats, jackets and the like have heretofore been provided with. closure means in the form of a separable fastener of the runway engaging type, but in all such devices with which I am familiar, the runways of the fastener are attached directly at the edge of each side of the opening which thefastener is adapted to close.
It is an object of the invention so to attach the fastener that when the garment is closed thereby, the garment will have the appearance of a doublebreasted garment, an effect which has not, so far as I am aware, been heretofore attainable.
With the above and other objects in view, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing, in which;
Figure 1, is a view in front elevation showing a garment constructed in accordance with the present invention in its closed position,
Figure 2, is a similar view showing the garment Figure 3, is a fragmentary view on an enlarged scale showing the garment open, and;
Figure 4, is a detail transverse sectional view on the line 44 of Figure 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the garment which is designated A is formed with two front panels 5 and 6.
The garment is adapted to be closed by means of a separable fastener of the runway type. One of the runway members, for example, the member 10 is secured to the panel 6 of the garment at the edge 7 thereof.
The other runway member which is designated 12 is mounted on the front of the panel 5 of 'the garment at a point removed from the edge '13 thereof.
This runway fastener is of the type wherein the traveler which is designated 15 is entirely removable with respect to one of the runway members, in this case the traveler being carried by the run way member 12 and entirely detachable with relation to the runway 10 as illustrated in Figures 2 and 3.
The runway fastener may be of any preferred type except that it is preferably of the type in which the traveler is completely detachable with respect to one of the runway members as heretofore described.
With the garment open as shown in Figure 2, when it is desired to close the same it is only necessary to engage the traveler 15 with the 69 runway member 10 and move the same relative to the runway members 10 and 12 to close the garment to the desired extent.
From the-foregoing it will be apparent that the present invention provides a new and novel garment which will present the appearance of a double-breasted'garment when the garment is closed as illustrated in Figure 1, as distinguished from such garments with which I am familiar in which the runway members are carried by 70 the edges of the garment opening and wherein the double-breasted effect cannot be obtained.
The runway fastener may be protected or partially hidden by means of projecting portions 17 and 18 of the garment as illustrated in Figure 4 and thus when the garment is closed the runway fastener will be practically invisible.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and what it is desired to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is;
1. A body garment having an opening, and a separable fastener of the runway engaging type, one of the runway members of said fastener being secured to the garment at one edge of said opening, the face of the garment having a slit spaced 85 from the other edge of the opening behind one edge of which slit the other of said runway members is secured, said members cooperating to secure the garment in a closed position with the edges in overlapping relation.
2. A body garment having an opening, a separable fastener of the runway-engaging type, one of the runway members of said fastener being secured to the garment at one edge of said opening, the face of the garment having a slit spaced from the other edge of the opening behind one edge of which slit the other of said runway members is secured, said members cooperating to secure the garment in a closed position with the edges in overlapping relation, and flaps formed 100 as a continuation of the face of the garment and overlying the respective members at their points of attachment to cover said members.
