V UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ADOLF LOEB, OF NEW YORK, N; Y., ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND SINAI NATHAN, OF SAME PLACE.
SHEET-METAL FABRIC.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 271,086, dated January 23, 1883.
' Application filed November 4, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADOLF LOEB, a citizen of Germany, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sheet-Metal Fabrics, of which the followingis a specification.
This invention relates to a fabric composed of a series of overlapping metallic strips fastened to a flexible back. The strips of sheet metal are flexible, so that the fabric, when finished, can be readily bent or formed into any desired shape, and the exposed edges of the sheet-metal strips are bent upon them selves, so as to avoid sharp edges.
In theaccompanyingdrawings, Figure 1 represents atransverse vertical section of my fab: ric. Fig. 2 is a face view of the same. Fig. 3 isa transverse vertical section of my fabric on a larger scale than the previous figures.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
In the drawings, the letter A designates the back ofmy fabric, which is made of leather, pasteboard, felt, or other flexible material. On this back are secured a series of metallic strips, 13, which are flexible, and which may be cut from sheet metal, or which may be produced by braiding metal wire so as to form flat tapes or strips of the desired width. These flexible metallic strips are attached to the back by means of rivets a, or by any other suitable fastenin g devices, and the edges of the strips overlap each other so that each strip conceals the fastening device of the preceding strip. When the flexible strips are made of sheet metal their exposed edges 1), Figs. 2 and 3, are bent upon themselves so that no raw edges are exposed.
My new fabric is intended particularly for a covering for traveling-bags, satchels, trunks,
or other articles of a similar nature. It can be readily bent or formed so as to conform to the shape of the article to which it is to be ap plied, and it can be fastened to the body of a trunk or other article of a similar nature by nails, screws, orother suitable fastening devices.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isp 1. A fabric composed of a flexible back and a series of overlapping metallic strips fastened to said back, substantially as described.
2. A fabric composed of a flexible back and a series of overlapping strips of sheet metal fastened to said back, the exposed edges of the sheet-metal strips being bent upon themselves, substantially as set forth. I
In testimony whereof I have hereuntoset my hand and seal in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. 1
ADOLF LOEB. [L. s] Vitnesses:
W. HAUFF, E. F. KASTENHUBER.
