EDWIN F. BRAINARD, OF GARDNER, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO FRANK J. PIERCE, OF SAME PLACE.
CHAIR' BOTTOM OR BACK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 679,939, dated August 6, 1901.
Application filed November 1, 1900. Serial No. 35,081. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.- Be it known that I, EDWIN F. BRAINARD, a
' citizen of the United States, residing at Gardner, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Chair Bottom or Back, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a new and improved chair bottom or back which shall be folded-back edges of said supporting-section.
perspective view, partly in section, of my improved construction. Fig. 2 is a partial detail sectional view, on an enlarged scale, illustrating the way the same is made; and Fig.
' 3 is a view of a modification hereinafter described.
In detail, B designates the supporting-section. The same is preferably made of Woven wire. The edges of the section B are turned or folded back on the body portion thereof, as indicated at 10.
A designates the outer or wearing section, which may be made of leather, plush, cloth, or of any desired material. The edges of this outer or wearing section are folded around, as at 11, under the folded-over edges 10 of the supporting-section and are inserted between the body portion and folded-back edges 10 of the supporting-section, as at 12. In this way a five-layer edge is formed around the complete article. Stuffing or padding 0 is generally inserted between the two sections A and B.
The improved construction is secured to the chair-frame D by driving suitable fastening devices, as nails 13, through the five-layer edges.
By following out the foregoing plan a construction is provided which is extremely strong, for the reason that the slippoi'tingsection B is of double thickness where the same is secured to the frame D, and the outer or wearing section is secured both to the body portion and turned-in edges of the supporting-section as well as between the body portion and turned-in edges of said supportingsection.
In making up the bottom or back after the outer layer A is folded around the supporting-section B the same is preferably-placed in a press and the edges put under a heavy pressure. This will force the three folds of the section A into the two folds of the supporting-section B. This will tend and help to make a strong union between the parts, as the outer layer A will thus be forced into the meshes of the woven-wire supporting-section B.
In Fig. 3 an additional layer E, of covering material, as cloth, is placed beneath the supporting-section B. This will cover the latter up, so that the same will not be exposed. This construction is preferred for chair-backs.
The details herein shown and described may be varied by a skilled mechanic without departing from the scope of my invention as expressed in the claims.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is"
1. As an article of manufacture, a chair bottom or back comprising a frame, a supporting fabric having its edges turned or folded back, an outer or wearing section hav ing its edges folded around the supportingsection and inserted between the body portion and folded-back edges of said supporting-section, and nails or fastening devices driven through the five-layer edges of said sections into the frame to secure the same thereto, substantially as described. 2. As an article of manufacture, a chair bottom or back comprising a frame, a wovenwire supporting section having its edges turned or folded back, an outer or wearing the five-layer edges and'bhe cove'ring s'ecbion to fasten the samet'o the frame", substantially? as described.
3. A chair bottom or back comprising a. frame D, a woven-wire supporting sec'tion B having its edges turned or folded back, an
onter wearing-section A lmving its edges folded aroundthes'n'pportirig=s'ectionand-in sertedbetween t'he body portion andfoldedba'ck edges'of' said snpportingj-section,- stuffing 0 interposed between said sections, and
nails or fastening devices 13 driven through the five-layer edges and into the frame D, substantially as described.
I-n-testirn0ny whereof I have hereunto set may Haind in tliefpresenceof' two subscribin witnesses.
EDWIN F. BRAINARD.
