ANNIE WALTHER AND MATIES sUPPLE, OF FOND DU LAG, wIscoNsIN.
GARMFENT-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 365,452, dated June 28, 1887- Application filed November 13, 1886. Serial No. 218,786. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that we, ANNIE WALTHER and MATIES SUPPLE, citizensof the United States, residing at Fond du Lac, in the county of Fond du Lac and State of W'isconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment-Fastenings; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to an improvement in fastenings for dresses, coats, and other articles of wearing-apparel, and is designed to produce a device of this character which shall be simple and durable in its construction, easy in its perspective view of the button and shield, the
shield being shown detached. Fig. 4 is a sectional view'of a garment, showing the fastening applied thereto; and Fig. 5 is a plan View of the shield.
' Referring to the drawings, Arepresents the top or body of the button, having firmly attached thereto the shank B.
B indicates the shank of .thebutton, consisting of a single piece of wire bent substantially in the form shown, and provided with two sharp pointed prongs, b b, adapted to be pushed through the cloth'or other material of which thegarment may be made.
' O designates a shield formed of a single piece of sheet metal, having its sides turned over toward the center to form pockets 0 c for the reception of prongs b b. The shield O has are overlapped, as shown in Fig. 4., and the prongs b b, protected by the shield O, are drawn through the eye E, effecting a rapid and secure fastening, the shield O preventing all possibility of injury from the sharp prongs of the'shank of the button.
If desired, the fastening may be made to present a very ornamental appearance by making the top or body portion A of some attractive design, as illustrated in Figs-1 and 2, in which a representation of a leaf is shown.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a garment-fastening, the button A,
provided with the shank B, having prongs b b, in combination with a shield for incasing said prongs, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. An improved fastening for garments, consisting of the button A, shank B, prongs b b, and shield O, in combination with the eye E, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
ANNIE YVALTHER. MATIES SUPPLE.
