SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 277,574, dated May 15, 1883.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DAVID J. KELLEY, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Button Stays, described and claimed in the following specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a. cheap, simple, convenient, and durable stay for buttons secured to the garment by sewing through the eyes or holes formed in the button and through the garment fabric and through the stay placed upon the inside of the fabric opposite the button to be secured thereto; and it consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the parts composing the button-stay, as hereinafter more fully described, and set forth in the claims.

It will be understood that I contemplate forming the leather portion of the stay of two 5 thicknesses and stitched together, as shown; and, ifdesired, the metal stay-piece B maybe placed between such leather stay-pieces A and then the said leather portions sewed or stitched together, so as to confine the metal 50 plate stay-piece in position between them, and thereby dispense with the fastening-points formed upon said metal stay-pieces; or, if desired, the confining-points of the stay-piece B may be formed or struck up centrally there- 55 from; or a single point may be employed to secure the metal stay-piece B to the leather.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A button-stay consisting of the leather 6o portion A and sheet-metal portion B, having holes or openings E, said parts being secured together, as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The button-stay consisting of the doubleleather portions A, and sheet-metal portions B, 65,
having openings E, and provided with fastening-points O, substantially as described, as and for the purposes set forth.
