P. F. PAULME.
GOAT. 8:0. No. 339,920. Patented Apr. 13, 1886.
' ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PAUL FRANQOIS PAULME, OF NE\V YORK, N. Y.
COAT, 86C.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 339,920, dated April 13, 1886.
Application filed October 29, 1885. Serial No. 181,281. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PAUL FRANQOIS PAULME, a citizen of the Republic of France, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Garments, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in garments; and it consists, essentially, in a coat, vest, jacket, or other garment having two lapels, each of which is provided with a line of button-holes near its outer edge, a series of hooks and eyes or other fastening devices along the bend of the lapel, and buttons arranged on the body of the garment in line with the button-holes in the lapels. A secondary series of fastenings is provided, which are adapted to be engaged by the first series, all of which is more fully pointed out in the following specification and claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of the garment. Fig. 2 is asimilar view showing the lapels arranged differently.
Similarletters indicate corresponding parts.
In the drawings, the letter A designates the body of the garment, which may be cut in the form of a jacket, as shown in the accompanying drawings, or to any other suitable style.
B B are the lapels, attached to the body of the garment, each of which is provided with a row of buttonholes, b b, extending along near the outer edge of the same, as usual, and upon the body of the garment, in a corresponding position under the lapels, and aligned with the buttonholes, are secured rows of buttons a a, to which either of the lapels B B can be buttoned. Along the seam or bend of the lapels are arranged hooks and eyes 0 c, or other suitable fastening devices, and an underlying extending tongue, d, which may be a part of the body of the garment, serves to completely conceal the underlying garment when the said fasteners c c are used to c ose the front of the coat.
It will be observed that by constructing a garment with the lapels and fastening devices constructed and situated as shown and described, such a garment can be adjusted to present the appearance of a variety of styles in regard to the cut of the lapel or breast portion of the coat.
When the fastening devices 0 0 are out of engagement with ea h other, and the lapel B is buttoned to rov /f buttons a on the body of the coat, and lapel B lies underneath lapel B, the garment represents the appearance of an ordinary double-breasted garment, Fig. 2. Each lapel can be buttoned to the row of buttons lying on the same side of the body with the lapel, Fig. 1, and the fastening devices 0 0 can be hooked into each otherthat is to say, lapel B can be buttoned to buttons a, lapel B to buttons a, and the lapels can be fastened along the row of books and eyes-whereby the appearance of the garment is varied. One lapel, B, can be buttoned to the row of buttons a, and lapel B can be buttoned also to said row of buttons a, whereby the garment is rendered triplebreasted, and the garment can be buttoned in other apparent ways to present varying appearances.
On the material of lapel B, or on the body A, directly above the series of eyes 0 and running parallel with said eyes 0, is a row of eyes, 6, Fig. 2, which can be engaged by the hooks 0 when the lapel is turned forward against the facing of the body A, so that the coat-lapel can be doubly secured. A similar row of hooks can be arranged upon lapel B to engage eyes 0 when the lapel B is buttoned to buttons a.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A garment having two lapels, B B, each of which is provided-with buttonholesbb and fastening devices 0 0, arranged along the bends of the lapels, and buttons at a, arranged on the body of the garment in line with the button-holes in the lapels, substantially as shown and described.
2. A garment. having two lapels, B B, each of which is provided with button-holes b b and hooks and eyes or other fastening devices 0 0, arranged along the bends of the lapels, a secondary row of eyes or hooks, d, on one of the lapels, and buttons arranged on the garment in line with the button-holes in the lapels, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
