CHARLES F. GLENN, OF EAST BRADY, PENNSYLVANIA. v
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 275,191, dated April 3, 1883.
Application filed Oct0her24,1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES F. GLENN, of East Brady, in the county of Clarion and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Shirts; and Ido hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, andin which- Figure l is a front view of my improved shirt, in which the bosom-strap and part of front strap, on which the bosom-strap slides, are shown in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a similar view, with the lower end of the bosom-flap turned to one side to show the bosom-strap and front strap; and-Fig. 3 is a sectional view through the bosom-flap and front part of the shirt.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures,
My invention has relation to shirts for mens and boys wear; audit consists in an improved construction and arrangement of the shirtbosom or bosom-flap, whereby several advantages are gained, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A denotes a shirt, of muslin or other suitable fabric, and of any desired style, size, and shape.
B is the bosom, which is in the nature of a flap fastened, by stitching or otherwise, to the neckband O at b, but otherwise entirely separate from the body of the shirt. Near the lower end of the bosom-flap, on its inner side, facing the shirt, is a strap, 1), made in two parts, the free ends of which are united by a button or buckle, E. Upon the front part of the shirt, back of the bosom-flap, is sewed a strap, F, which has a button-hole in its lower free end, by which it may be buttoned upon the button G, after the free end of strap F has been inserted through the transverse strap D of the bosom, as shown clearly in Fig. 3 of the drawings. The bosom, being separate from the shirt, except at top, where it is fastened to the neckband, can be starched and ironed without starching and ironing the body of the shirt to which it is attached. It is not afiected by the perspirationof the wearer, inasmucb as it forms no part of the shirt-body proper, but allows air to pass between it and the front of the shirt, and the bosom will always remain smooth and without wrinkles, regardless of the position of the wearer, as its strap 1) permits it to slide up and down upon the fixed strap or flap F. Hence when the wearer of the shirt is in an inclined, stooping, or reclining position, causing the front of the shirt, back of the bosom-flap, to wrinkle, the flap itself 'will remain straight and smooth, always presenting a neat and unruftled appearance.
By making strap D in two parts, connected at their free ends by the buckle E, this strap may be unbuckled, so as not to stick to the bosom-flap in starching and ironing the latter. And, again, where thefree end of the strap or flap F is buttoned to the waistband of the drawers or pantaloons of the wearer, the lower end of the bosom-flap may be adjusted in position upon flap F by unbnckling strap l),and again buckling it after its ends have been passed through the loop formed by strap F.
I am aware that shirts have been made he forehaving the bosom connected thereto, at its upper end, to the collar-band and yoke, and at its lower end to the body of the shirt, and unattached elsewherethroughout its entire area; nor do I claim, broadly, such construction; but.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
As an improvement in shirts, the bosom-flap B, attached to the shirt-front at the neckband, and having at its lower free end a strap and buckle, D E, adapted to be passed through and slide upon the strap or flap F of the shirtfront, substantially as and. for the purpose herein shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES F. GLENN.
