SHIRT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 258,041, dated May 16, 1882,

and useful Improvement in Shirts; and I do hereby declare the same tobedescribed in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure 1 is a front elevation, and Fig. 2 a

1.o horizontal section, of one of iny improved shirts as closed, and Fig. 3 is a like elevation of it as open, or in a-conditicn to be drawn over the head and upon 'the body of aperson.

My invention, defined in the claim hereinafter presented, relates to that class of shirts,

' usually termed overshirts,7 worn by wheelmen or riders of bicycles, or by lawn-tennis77 players; and it consists of a shirt having what is termed a closed front and a closed o back, and havingin the body, at oneshoulder,

a slit or opening from the collar down along or through the shoulder to, or nearly to, the sleeve, and also having the collar from the said opening to, or near to, the width of the front ot' the body detached from the body,

the shirt being provided with buttons and button-holes lor closing the opening and buttoning to the shirt the detached part ot' the collar. A shirt so made, with the collar fora 3o part of its length fastenedto the body, can

readily be put on or removed from the body of a person, and after having been drawn on can be closed at the shoulder and have the free part of the collar secured to the shirt-body.

In the drawings the said body ot' the shirt is shown at A, the sleeves at B B, and collar at O, the saidcollar being what is usually termed a turndown one. The shirt at the breast, from the collar down ward, is elosed,`or

4o without any opening for a persons head to pass through while the shirt may he. in the act of being drawn on or oi' the body of such person, although such shirt may have in its front, as shown, a series of lacing-holes, e, and a lacing, 1), to extend up the middle of such 4 front, the lacing also going through holes c d in the collar. The front at the middle may be made with two plaits or laps to receive the lacing-holes, such plaits or laps being to give 5o to the front the appearance of what is termed a laced open front, having an opening extending down the middle ofthe front, and for a persons head to pass through while the shirt may be in the act of being drawn upon or removed from the body of such person. In such cases the lacing and lacing-holes, or such and the fictitious opening, or that between the plaits or liies, are simply matters of ornamentation, except that the lacing by going through the holesin the collar nearits ends is used to tie together the ends ot' the collar at the i'ront of the neck, and to secure down to the front the end portion of the detached part of the collar, there being a lacing-hole in the saidpart near its end. Along the crown ot' one shoulder, from the collar toter nearly to, the sleeve, the shirt is open, as shown at g, the shirt contiguous thereto being provided with buttons h and button-holes i, to enable the said opening to be-closed by them. In other words, the back and the front ofthe shirt are disconnected along the shoulder from the collar to, or nearly to, the sleeve, and provided with buttons and button-holes or eyelets and alacing, or other suitable separable l'astcnings, to effect the required closing ot' the shoulderopening. The collar in such case is connected to the neck part of the shirt-body, except from the shoulder-opening to, or about to, 'the iniddle ot' the front, the disconnected part kof the collar having button-holes Zin its lower part to receive buttons m, fastened tothe shirtbody, formed to admit of the detachable partof the collar being lapped a short distance on it, all being substantially as represented.

Sometimes I provide the shirt-body and detachable part ot' the collar with lacing-holes,

arranged in the collar and neck and in the back and front ot' the shirt at the shoulderopening, such being to receive alacing. That used within the front may be long enough to extend therefrom through the neck and dctachable partof the collar, and thence through the lacing-holes of the shoulder-opening; but l do not consider such means of closing the shoulder-openin g and fastening down the detachable part of the collaras so convenient or useful as buttons and button-holes.

Preparatory to drawing on the shirt it should be unbuttoned at the shoulder, and the IOO detachable part of the collar should also be unbuttoned from the neck part of the front. The shirtin such condition may be drawn ou,77 and after the drawing of it on a person may have been accomplished he is to button the parts together at the shoulder, and also button the separate part of the collar down to the front.

I make no claim to a shirt provided with two openings extending through the collarband and down along the shoulders, and having a collar-band or collar in tivo distinct pieces to button together, all being in manner and arranged as shown in the United States Patent No. 111,978, as l havein my improved shirt but one-shoulder-openiug, and the collar is in one piece, and is disconnected from the shirt-body from theshoulderopening to, ornear to, the middle ot' the neck; nor do l claim a shirt-bosom constructed as shown in theUnited States Patent No. 5,019, in which there are no shoulder-openings,but au opening at the back, such being very inconvenieutof access for being closed, whereas by having the opening at and down the shoulder from the collar and such collar arranged with such opening, in manner as represented, ready access can be had to the opening to effect the closing of it. In my shirt the collar is fastened to the back around the entire back of the neck.

I claim as my invention- A shirt having a closed frontfan opening from the neck down along the shoulder, and a collar connected with the shirt from such opening entirely around the back ofthe neck and to the middle of the front, but disconnected therefrom, from the shoulder-opening thereof to, or near to7 the middle otl the front of the neck, the shirt being provided with buttons and button-holes or other suitable separable Vfastenings properly arranged for closing the opening at the shoulder and connecting the free part ot' the collar to the shirt, as occasion may require, all being substantially as set forth.
