SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 256,443, dated April 11, 1882.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALBERTv R. PERKINS of Newton, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shirts; and I do hereby declare the same to be described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which Figure 1 is a front View, Fig. 2 a rear view, and Fig. 3 a horizontal section, of a shirt constructed in accordance with my invention, the

nature of which is defined in the claims hereinafter presented.

' My improvement relates to the class of shirts usually termed overshirts, such as are generally worn by wheehnen or riders of bicycles, the said shirts usually being made of flannel or woolen cloth, there being at and up the middle of the breast portion of the shirt t;vo sets of lacin g-holes and alacin g run through t 1cm.

In my improved shirt the front or breast portion of the body (irrespective of the shield) is entirely closed-that is to say, it is without any opening or slit extending from the collar downward; but there is in the back of the body of the shirt, and also through the collar at its rear, a long opening or openings to be closed by buttons and button-holes adapted to the parts of the shirt next adjacent to the openings.

The shirt Igencrally provide with a breastshield having at and down its middle two plaits or flies provided with lacing-holes and a lacin g, such breast-shield being securely fastened or secured at its edges to the body of the shirt.

In the drawings, A denotes the shirt-body, and B its turn-down collar. 0 is the breastshield; a a, its plaits or files, and b the lacing thereof. r

The turndown collar is open at its back, the opening extending down through such collar and into and down in the back of the shirtbody a suitable distance-via, fifteen inches, or thereabout. The collar-opening is shown at c and the back-openin g at d. The next adjacent parts, 9 g, of the shirt at such opening tance, and to have to one of them a set of buttons, e, and to the other a set of button-holes, f, to effect the closing of the openings of the collar and back. I

Preparatory'to putting on a shirt of this description it is to be unbuttoned atitsrear opening, it being closed by buttoning together the laps -g g, after the shirt may have been drawn on the body of a person.

I am' aware that it is not new to make a cotton or linen shirt with a front having no opening in it from the neck downward, and to ar-- range in the back of the said shirt, and in the .neckband thereof, such an opening, such shirt being without any collar, especially what is termed in trade a turn-down collar. 1 there- 'fore make no claim to a shirt so made.

What I claim as my invention, or as an improved article of manufacture, is as follows,

viz:

1. A shirt provided with a collar and closed in front and open down the back and through the back of the collar, and having to the lips of the openings buttons and button-holes or other proper separable fastenings, all being substantially as described.

2. A shirt provided with a collar and closed in front, and there provided with a lacing and lacing-holes, as described, and also open in the back of the collar, and from thence down in the back of the body, and having the lips of the cloth at such openings provided with buttons and button-holes or other proper separable fastenings, all being substantially as set forth.

3. Ashirt having acollarand a breast-shield and a lacing andlacing-holes in thelatter, and also constructed with an opening down through the collar at its rear, and one in. continuation down into the back of the shirt-body, such bodyand collar having. buttons and buttonholes for closing their said openings, all being substantially as described and represented.
