I. SPERLING.
SHIRT.
No. 273,906. Patented Mar. 13.1883.

NITED STATES ISIDOR SPERLING, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO JONAS STRAUSS,
PATENT OFFTCE.
OF SAME PLACE.
SHIRT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 273,906, dated March 13, 1883.
(No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISIDOR SPERLING, a subject of the German Empire, but a resident of the United States of America, residing at Ohio-ago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shirts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to shirts or any other garment of wearing-apparel; and it consists in a detachable and reversible shield or bosom having cord on each side of different color, whereby the garment may be given the appearance of three different shirts by reversing or detaching the shield, substantially as will be hereinafter more fully described.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe it, referring to the accompanying drawings,in which Figure l is a front view of my shirt, and Fig. 2 is an end View of the shield.
A represents a shirt of any of the ordinary and well-known forms and materials, to which is buttoned in the front, over the opening a, a shield or bosom, B. This shield is formed of two thicknesses of goods, b b, as seen in Fig. 2, which are split down their center from the top nearly to the bottom. corresponding to the opening in the shirt A, and covering these slits. Between the pieces 1) bis inserted a third piece, b, which closes the opening, and the edges of the slits form two flaps on each side. Each of the flaps c c is provided with a suitable number of eyelet-holes, through which are passed cords or lacings d d, which are of different color on opposite sides of the shirt. The shirt may be worn Without the shield B;
or this shield mav be used with either side ex posed, thereby gaining in one garment the appearance of three diti'erent shirts. When the shield is used the lace 61 upon the outside has its ends passed through eyelet-holes e e in the collar of the shirt and tied, thus serving to 5 hold the shirt together at the throat. Any color of lace may be used, and the shield may be ornamented, if so desired, with fancy stitching in colored threads.
Having thus fully described my invention, 0
outer edges, and having the two outer pieces slit down their center from the top nearly to the bottom, and provided with eyelet-holes for lacing, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with a shirt provided with suitable buttons or fastenings on its bosom, of a reversible shield-piece composed of several thicknesses of material, the outer ones of which are slit nearly their whole length,
and provided with eyelet-ho'es, through which 6 laces of different colors are, passed, substantiallyas and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ISIDOR SPERLING.
