UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT R. PERKINS, OF NEWTON, ASSIGNOR TO SIMONS, HATCH & WHITTEN OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
SHIRT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 257,892, dated May 16, 1882.
Application filed February 27, 1882.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT B. PERKINS, of Newton, in the county of Middlesex, of the State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shirts; and I do I hereby declare the same to be described in the following specification, and represented in the accompanying. drawings.
My present invention relates to the mode of cutting the front of a shirt in one piece of cloth, so as to enable such front without any opening down along its middle, and to open aside thereof and presentthe appearance of having, when finished, a supplementary front or breast-shield.
Figure 1 of the drawings represents the shirt-front as cut with a single slit and two neck-notches, While Fig. 2 exhibits it as out with two slits and three neck-notches.
In carrying out my invention 1 form the said shirt-front A with a neck-notch, a, arranged in the upper part of it, and at or near the middle thereof, as represented, and besides such notch I make in the said upper part, either on one, or on each side of and near to the said neck-noteh, another notch, D. From each notch b, I extend down in the cloth, as shown,a slit, 0, in continuation of the inner side of the notch. The edges of the slit and its notch are to be finished in any proper manner, and the piece (No model.)
and buttons f, arranged as represented, in order that the median part of the cloth may be lapped over and buttoned to the part or parts next aside of it. I usually narrowly plait the shirt-front on the curve-line g h z k, as shown in Fig. 1, and stitch down the lap of the plait, so as to give to the shirt-front the appearance of having a double or supplementary front or breast-shield. The collar or neckband is to be secured in part to the cloth or the outer edge of each supplementary notch b.
The middle of the front of the factitious breast-shield may be constructed with rows of holes and a lacing, or may be otherwise suitably finished.
1 claim-- The shirt-front having in its upper part the neck-notch a, and one or two supplementary notches, Z2, and a slit, 0, extending down from each of said supplementary notches, all being substantially and for the purpose as set forth, the said shirt-front being provided with buttons and button-holes or other suitable separable fastenings, arranged substantially as represented.
ALBERT It. PERKINS.
