PATENT OFFICE.
COMBINED VEST AND SHIRT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 737,978, dated September 1, 1903. Application filed March 6,1903. Serial No.146,532. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern;-
Be it known that I, J EssE D. VAN FLEET, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Larimore, in the county of Grand Forks and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Vest and Shirt, of which the following is a specification.
The invention provides a garment comprising a waistcoat or vest and a shirt, the vest portion being of accustomed pattern but provided with the yoke, bosom, and sleeves of a shirt, the front quarters and back of the vest being common to each garment. This garment is particularly designed for summer wear, giving to the person a genteel appearance, while at the same time being light and cool.
For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result, reference is to be had to the following description and drawings hereto attached.
While the essential and characteristic features of theinvention are susceptible of modification, still the preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a front View of a combined shirt and vest embodying the invention, parts being broken away. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line X X of Fig. 1 looking to the right, as indicated by the arrow. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line Y Y of Fig. 1.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The vest or waistcoat is of usual construction, comprising the front quarters 1 and back 2, the quarters 1 being adapted to button at their front edges and being open at the top to expose the bosom of the shirt. The quarters 1 may be of any fancy material and the back 2 of some light cheap textile. Sleeves 3 are applied to the vest and stitched to the armholes thereof and may be of muslin or other material commonly employed in the manufacture of shirts.
Combined with the vest isthe upper front portion of a shirt, the same comprising bosom 4 and'yoke 5. The bosom at opens in the front in line with the quarters 1 of the vest, thereby admitting of the garment being placed in position or removed after the fashion of a coat. The bosom 4 is stitched at its edges to the quarters 1 a short distance from the edges of said quarters bordering upon the opening, thereby giving the loose effect of independent vest and shirt. The yoke 5 is stitched to the bosom 4 by shoulder-seams in the usual way and is likewise stitched at its ends and lower rear edge to the back of the vest, whereby the upper portion of the yoke is loose, as indicated most clearly in Fig. 2, leaving the bands of the vest and shirt portions separate, so as to present the usual appearance and enable the collar to be buttoned to the neckband of the shirt in the ordinary way.
A garment substantially as herein set forth to all appearances presents the same effect of an independent shirt and vest and is cooler and lighter in warm weather and gives a neat and tidy appearance to the wearer.
Having thus described the invention, what is claiined as new is A waistcoat comprising front quarters and a back, sleeves applied to the armholes of the Waistcoat, a bosom open in the front and stitched at its inner edges to the quarters of the waistcoat a distance from the opening thereof, and a yoke stitched at its ends to the bosom and to the quarters of the waistcoat and at its lower edge to the latter, leaving its upper portion free, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
