SAMUEL, e. SCHENOK, on NEW YORK, N. Y.
SHIRT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 545,615, dated September 3, 1895.
Application filed June 1, 1895. Serial No. 551,365. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL G. SCHENCK, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city, county, and State of New'York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shirts, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates in the main to improvements in outing or negligee shirts, and the characteristic feature of my shirt is the employment of lateral flaps on its front to take over the suspenders and conceal them, said flaps being usually the lateral free edges of a front simulating a vest-front, which latter buttons together and its free lower part extends down over the waistband of the trousers outside, the shirt being tucked inside in the usual manner. Where the shirt-front is made to simulate a vest it will have lapels, but these are not essential to my invention.
The accompanying drawings illustrate an embodiment of my invention.
Figure 1 is a face view showing the shirt on thewearer, and Fig. 2 is a rear view of the same. Fig. 3 is a face view of the shirt, showing the flaps turned up or back in order to illustrate the construction. Fig. 4 is a crosssection of the shirt on line :0 m, Fig. 3, showing the construction.
The body 1 of the shirt is made or may be made in substantially the usual way and of the usual materials, having sleeves 2 and a neckband or collar.
Fig. 1 shows the shirt furnished with a permanent collar 3, and Fig. 3 shows it with a neckband 4 only.
The bosom of the shirt is cut out or omitted, as indicated in Figs. 3 and 4, leaving a rectangular opening, of which 5 5 in Fig. 4 represent the upright margins or edges.
On the front of the shirt is applied a front which I will call a vest-front, as in the drawings it is made to simulate a vest. This front is stitched to the shirt-front along the margin 5 5 of the opening therein, the lines of stitching being indicated in Fig. 1 by dotted lines 6 6, thus leaving the vest-front free, except along the lines 6 6, and forming'outer lateral flaps 7 7, which take over and conceal the suspenders of the wearer, and lower or pendent flaps 8 8, which take over the waistband of the trousers 9 of the wearer, the tail 10 of the shirt being tucked into the trousers in the usual way. The outer edges of the lateral flaps 7 will, by preference, be provided with buttonholes to button onto buttons 11 on the shirt-bodyl. The inner flaps 12 12 of the vest-front will be provided with buttonholes and buttons in a well-known way, so as to button up along the median line of the front from the bottom to the neckband. The vest-front may or not be provided with lape1s 13. If these are employed, they will-be stitched to the vest-front along their inner edges or margins.
At the back the shirt will be provided by preference with vest-straps 14, as seen in Figs. 2 and 4. These are designed to draw the garment snugly about the waist of the wearer.
. The vest-front may be provided with pockets similar to those in an ordinary vest, and the flaps 12 12 might be permanently secured together, the necessary opening being at the back. r y
In Figs. 1 and 3 the portion of the vest-front between the lapels 13 is shaded, so as to simulate a striped shirt-bosom, and this part might be of diiferent material from the rest of the vest-front; but this is not at all essential, and ordinarilyI prefer to make this part between the lapels integral with the other parts of the Vest-front.
' Having thus described my invention, I claim--- As an improved article of manufacture, a shirt, comprising a body portion which is cut away at the part corresponding to the bosom thereof, and two halves of a vest front, each stitched to said body portion only along the margin of said opening, and extending laterally in both directions, and also downwardly therefrom, whereby there are formed outer lateral flaps adapted to conceal the suspenders of the wearer, inner lateral flaps covering the opening at the bosom, and pendent flaps to take over the Waistband of the trousers, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
SAMUEL G. SOHENCK. Witnesses:
