SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 704,392, dated July 8, 1902.

Beit known that I, GEORGE W. SHEoKELLs, residing at 1103 Nanticoke street, in the city of Baltimore, State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shirt-Vests; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to garments for men; and it has for its object to provide a garment which will combine the features of a vest, together with some of the features of a shirt, while at the same time there will be only a single back to the garment and the shirt will be without tails, While the front portion of the garment will be so constructed as to give an efficient ventilation.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will be understood from the following description.

In the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the garment, the upper portion of one side of the front being pulled forward to disclose the arrangement of the shirt-bosom. Fig. 2 is a transverse section through the garment at the lapels thereof. Fig. 3 is a rear View of the garment.

Referring now to the drawings, there is shown a garment comprising, essentially, a vest, which may be of any suitable material, although, preferably, of light weight white goods, such as linen, and which includes the right and left hand front sections 5 and 6 and the back section 7, having the usual strap 8 for regulating the girth of the garment.

The front sections 5 and 6 of the vest are provided with pockets 9, having the usual arrangement, and with lapels 10, although the latter may be omitted, as will be understood.

The back of the vest is formed of two layers of fabric 11 and 12, the edges of which are connected at the back seams of the arms and at the side seams of the garment, also at the shoulder-seams, at the back of the neck, and at the bottom of the back. 7

The front sections 5 and 6 of the vest have linings 13 and let, which are attached to the sections at the side seams, the shoulder-seams, the bottom edges, and the inner edges thereof, including the lapels, the linings being unattached to the front sections at the armholes thereof.

The sleeves l5 and 16 are attached to the back of the vest and its lining and to the linings of the front sections, so that in the front the garment has every appearance of a vest worn over a shirt.

Attached to the shoulder-seams of the vest and at the inner side thereof is a shirt-bosom 20 of a width sufficient to lie with its side edges well within the edges of the front sections and which bosom extends downwardly a sufficient distance to insure against it rising and projecting through the opening between the lapels. The bosom is provided with a neckband 21, which is continued around the upper edge of the back of the vest at the neck thereof, and this band is adapted for attachment of a collar through the medium of buttons engaged with buttonholes 22 therein. The bosom in the present instance is shown as being split and provided with studs to hold it closed, the split construction permitting the garment to be put on and off with facility.

In practice instead of splitting the bosom of the garment the back of the vest may be split after the manner of an open-back shirt, it being understood that in practice other modifications maybe made andany suitable materials and proportions may be used without departing from the spirit of the invention.

What is claimed is w 1. A garment comprising a vest having shirt-bosom disposed therein, said bosom being attached at its upper edges to the vest at the shoulder-seams thereof and a neckband attached to the upper edges of the bosom and the back of the vest and adapted for attachment of a collar thereto, the bosom being unattached at its side and bottom edges and lying behind the front of the vest.

2. A garment comprising a vest having its back and its front formed double, sleeves at tached to the back and the linings of the front sections only, and a bosom attached to the upper portion of the vest and having a neckband, said band being attached also to the upper edge of the back of the vest.
