Be it known that we, WILLIAM A. MC- DANIEL and CHARLES A. SINGREY, citizens of the United States, residing at Fort Vayne, in the county of Allen, in the State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Union Overall-Suits; and We do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.

Our invention relates to improvements in union suits for men, especially designed for use by the laboring classes.

The object of our present invention is to provide an improved union overall-suit especially designed for use by miners, machinists, printers, clerks, farmers, and the like and also so constructed and arranged as to overcome the overall appearance and present a genteel imitation of vest and trousers, thus adapting our combination-suit for use by grocers, clerks, and the like and also by small boys while at play.

0 ur improvement consists of a combination suit consisting of a coat and trousers, both opening down in front from the neck-opening to the bifurcation of the garment and also open on the waist-line in the rear, which opening is shielded by an improved double flap, the said neck-opening having no collar, but is provided with a shirt-bosom attachment, the body of the garment being provided upon its front face with a vest-and-trousers appearance.

The principal novel features of our invention reside in the combination of the various improvements by which theoverall appearance of the combination-suit is eliminated and a vest'and-trousers appearance is produced, with a shirt-bosom effect, and our improved double flap for shielding the opening at the waist-line, thereby overcoming the ob jectionablc appearance of the usual extended coat-flap.

Similar reference-numerals indicate like parts throughout the several views, in which- Figure l is a front view of our improved combination-suit, showing theimproved form of collar with shirt-bosom attachment and also showing vest-and-trousers appearance. Fig. 2 is a rear view of the same, broken away in part to show the arrangement of our improved flap which shields the opening at the waist-line. Fig. 3 is a detail of the shirtfront attachment, showing the relative ar rangement of the same and the manner of securing it in position broken away. Fig. at is a detail in cross-section, showing the tuck by which the vest appearance is secured.

Our improved union suit may be made of any suitable material, preferably of such lightweight but strong material as is usually made up into overall-suits. 3

The body portion 1 of the garment has a neck-opening 2, which is made without a collar, which thereby gives it the appearance of a vest-collar and adapts it to be conveniently worn with both a coat and vest, if desired. To the inner face of one front side of said neck-opening is secured a triangular strip 8 of laundered linen or other suitable material in imitation of a shirt-bosom, having its opposite edge secured to the inner face of the garment at the adjacent edge of said neck-opening in any suitable manner either by a hook and eye or buttons, as shown in Fig. 3.

The garment has a longitudinal opening 9 from the said neck-opening to the bifurcation of the garment, which is closed by buttons 10, concealed by a suitable flap 11 in a well-understood manner. At the waist-line of the union garment and upon both sides of the said opening 9 is arranged a tuck 12 or horizontal fold, which thereby gives the front face of the garment the appearance of a vest and trousers, particularly when a coat is worn over the garment. This tuck is formed by a single seam 13, as shown.

The body portion is provided with two upper pockets 14c and 15, which may be of any proper size and may be made by stitching a facing pocket-piece upon the garment or by suspending a pocket within the garment in a well-understood manner. The garment may also be provided at suitable points on its front face with horizontal strips 26, stitched thereon in imitation of the usual lower vest-pockets. The garment thus presents the appearance of a vest and trousers, which is desirable when worn by grocers, clerks, and others.

The garment is provided upon its rear face at the waist-line with a transverse slitor opening 17, which is closed or covered as follows: The trousers 19 are provided upon both sides with the longitudinal slits 18,which are closed in use by the buttons 20 and are of course provided with suitable side pockets 27 and hip-pockets 28. The trousers have upon their rear face an'eXtension-fiap 29, Fig. 2, extending upward about two inches beyond the waist-line, thereby avoiding the necessity of the usual unsightly prolongation of the adjacent coat-fiap to securely close the slit or opening 17 when the wearer is stooping over at his work, which tends to spread the said opening. The rear portion of the said trousers is still further secured by means of a short elastic suspender 22 of any proper form, whose upper end is secured to the inner face of the body portion in any proper manner at 23, while the lower end is secured to buttons 2t on the upper edge of the trousers extension. This upper extension of the trousers is concealed by a pendent overhanging flap 30 of the said body portion, Fig. 2.

Another improvement in our union suit is that the sleeves 31 thereof are gored upon their lower face at the armhole at 32, thereby enabling the operator to raise his arm to any desired angle without producing a drawing strain on the body of the garment, as shown in Fig. 2.

The operation of our improved union suit verse opening 17 in all positions of the body in use, and our improved sleeve gives the wearer full use of his arms, as in hammering, &c.

As before stated, when worn by grocers, clerks, teamsters, and the like it is desirable that the union suit present a vest-and-trousers appearance, particularly when worn with a coat, as in cold weather.

Having thus described our invention, what we desire to secure by Letters Patent is- A combination-suit, comprising a body-garment and a pair of trousers, the front of the body-garment and the front of the trousers being made of one piece of material and vertically divided on the median line from the neck-opening of the body-garment to the crotch-of the trousers, the body-garment and the trousers being divided horizontally at the rear Waist-line to form overlapping flaps, a

.fold at about the front waist-line to give the body-garment a vest-like appearance, substantially as shown and described.
