DRESS-SHIELD.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters PatentNo. 542,991, dated July 23, 1895.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SALLIE G. GROUT, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Armpit Shields and Elastic Supports Therefor, of which the following is a specification.

My invention has relation to an armpit shield and an elastic support therefor of the class in which the shield is not united to the waist or other article of apparel, but is sup ported by an elastic connection established over the shoulder of the wearer and under the armpit; and in such connection it relates particularly to the construction and arrangement of such a shield and its elastic support.

The principal object of my invention is to provide a simple, durable, and comparatively inexpensive armpit shield separate from the garment, held in position at the armpit and supported by a strap of elastic material fitting over the shoulder of the wearer, and the support of the shield having stockinet or other protective material secured to the support, so as to present the waterproof faces of the same to portions of the bodyand to separate them from the apparel adjacent to the faces of the protector.

The nature and characteristic features of my invention will be more fully understood from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of a pair of dress or armpit shields embodying my invention in position upon the person of the wearer, and Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view of one of said shields and its elastic support detached from the person.-

Referring to the drawings, A is the dressshield having the curved fold a, adapted to fit the armpit E of the wearer. This shield A comprises the two crescent-shaped flaps e and f, of muslin, duck, or the like, united with each other at their concave upper edges by stitching 1', as illustrated in Fig. 2, following the curve of the fold a of the shield, and

also having preferably their curved outer or free edges stitched. The flap f is preferably slightly longer than the flap e and terminates in strap-like extensions, in which a connection with one another is established by an interposed elastic strip or band 71, as clearly shown in the drawings.

To adjustthe shield of my invention to the person the straps thereof, with their elastic band, are placed over the shoulder D ofthe wearer and the curve fold a of the shield is fitted under the armpit E, as illustrated in arm flap united to each other at the concave upper edges thereof, the body flap being extended above the said concave edges to form a shoulder strap, joined by an elastic band, and a waterproof shield of substantially crescent shape secured to the outer face'of each of said flaps and covering the said concave upper edges, the construction being such that when the waterproof shield becomes soiled it may be readily removed from the body and arm flaps without destroying the same-and replaced by another and the shield as so arranged presenting double thicknesses of material between the parts of the secured waterproof shield to said flaps to affiord additional SALLIE GR 5 means for absorption of moisture given off in Witnesses:
