UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIGE.
CHARLES A. BROWN, OF TROY, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHIRTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 221,029., dated October 28, 1879; application filed September 29, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. BROWN, of the city of Troy, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Wearing Apparel, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The invention is designed for special application to under-shirts, but maybe used in connection with mens blouses or working-shirts, dress-shirts, and other similar garments worn by men, women, or children, and which are usually opened at the front or back, in order to be pnt on.
The objects of the invention are to insure a better tit about the chest and neck; to close up the front and back of the garment that the chest and lungs may be the better protected' from drafts of air; and, when applied to such garments as tine shirts or ladies vests, to sare labor and material in trimming.
To these ends the invention consists in a shirt, under-shirt, blouse, or similar garment, having a slit extending from the neck-band, at or near each shoulder, to a distance wit-hin the body of the .garment sufficient to form a front liap, which, when lowered, will allow the head of the wearer to pass through the opening formed. The edges of the flap are made to lap over the edges of garment at the cut therein, in order to form a close joint, which will, as far as possible, exclude air, and buttons or suitable attaching devices are placed upon the garment, at or near the neck-band, by means of which the iiap is buttoned orheld in place.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a front view of the garment with the ap lowered. Fig. 2 shows a garment constructed in accordance with my invention, having a ,chest` protector added.
Similar letters of reference indicate similar parts in the different views.
A is the body of the garment.
From the neck-band at a a a slit is cut on each side to b b, the slit extending, preferably, at an outward angle, as shown, toward a point under the arm.
The flap c is formed by that portion of the fabric embraced between the slits, aud, when the garment is to be put on over the head of the wearer, it is lowered, as shown iu Fig. 1.
The edges of the garment at the slits are bound or trimmed with a wide binding, d, and the edges of the flap are made accordingly to lap the garment, thus forming a close joint `and excluding the air from the person of the wea-rer. The edges of the iap are also suit ably bound or trimmed.
Buttons or convenient attaching devices are placed on the garment at d, and button-holes are put inthe ap at d', the flap, when buttoned up or held in place7 being a-s shown in Fig. 2.
In Fig. 2 the liap is of double thickness, and is extended in area, so as to form a chestprotector, which is seen to be perfectly close and therefore efficient for the purposes for which it is designed.
Having described my invention, I claim as new and wish to secure by Letters Patent of the4 United States- As a new article of manufacture, a shirt, under-shirt, blouse, or other similar article of apparelopening at the neck, on both sides, at a point at or near the shoulder, by oblique slits extending from the neck-band to points within the body of the garment, whereby a downwardly -falling iiap is formed, the same being finished in the usual way with stitching, and devices for holding the parts together when on the wearer, all substantially as speci fied.
In testimony whereof I have hereto sub Y 'scribed my name in the presence of two wit OHAS. A. BROWN.
UGSSCS.
Witnesses CHARLES K. BROWN, S. D. HOPKINS.
