a Attj s,
ALBERT C. HERZBERG, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
ADJUSTABLE COLLAR AND LAPEL FOR READY-MADE GARMENTS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT G. HERZBERG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Collars and Lapels for Ready-Made Garments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The present invention relates, generally, to improvements in wearing apparel for men, women or children; and, the invention relates more particularly to a novel construction and arrangement of collar and reveres or lapels for coats, jackets and the like.
The present invention has for its principal object to provide an arrangement of coat collar and lapels for use on ready made clothing, the purpose of the same being to render the alteration and fitting of such ready made clothing to the form of the purchaser both easy and simple'of accomplishment, and, furthermore, when the garment is so altered and fitted to meet the requirements of the form of the purchaser the proper fit and appearance of a well setting collar and lapels will be obtained.
A further object of the present invention is to provide an adjustable collar and lapels for ready made clothing which are separable from the body of the garment, so that said garment may be altered to meet the requirements of the form of the purchaser before the said collar and lapels are finally secured thereto, thus providing a means for obtaining the perfect fit of such ready made clothing, and saving much time, labor and eX- pense in carrying out such necessary alterations.
In ready made garments as heretofore provided the collar and lapels are secured in place and finished to form a permanent part of the garment, hence when it is necessary to alter the garment to secure an approximate fit to the form of the purchaser great difliculty is met with in obtaining a proper adjustment of the collar and lapels after such alterations have been made, and in many instances it is impossible to obtain a proper adjustment thereof. For example,

any alteration of the shoulders of the garment throws the collar out of proper alinement, frequently making it necessary to rip the whole collar off and replace it; or if the shoulders of the garment are raised the collar bulges at the sides. If one shoulder is raised the collar bulges at one side, and one lapel will be higher than the other. These, and many other similar alterations, which are frequently necessary to be made in ready made clothing to obtain an approximate fit to the form of the purchaser, so disturb the proper set of the collar and lapels that it is necessary to rip 0d" the collar from the garment and away from the lapels and reshape such parts at the cost of much time, labor and expense. The present invention is adapted to obviate all such difficulties by providing a separable collar and lapels made in one part substantially as set forth. in the claim appended hereto.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings. in which Figure l is a face view of a garment provided with the novel arrangement of separable and adjustable collar and lapels embodying the principles of my present invention, the same being shown as they appear when finally adjusted and finished upon an altered garment. The front of the garment is turned aside in this view to show the appearance of the facing where said collar and lapels are secured thereto. Fig. 2 shows a face view of a garment ready to have my novel adjustable collar and lapels attached thereto after any necessary alterations have been made in the said garment; Fig. 3 is a similar view, one side of the garment being turned aside to show the garment facing in its incomplete state before said novel adjustable collar and lapels are attached thereto. Fig. a is a face view of a garment illustrating my novel arrangement of adjustable collar and lapels in the process of being applied thereto. Fig. 5 is,
a view illustrating the said adjustable collar and lapels about to be brought in proper relation with a garment, the latter being shown in dotted outline to more clearly distinguish the collar and lapels and their separable relation to said garment. Fig. 6 is another view of a garment upon which are finally arranged my novel adjustable collar and lapels, this view illustrating the garment fronts turned back, and further showing how the collar and lapels are finally attached in their proper relation to said garment by sewing the ends of the facing portions of said lapels into place to form the completed garment facing. Fig. 7 is a front view of the novel adjustable collar and lapels removed from a garment and illustrating more completely their separable nature.
Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the hereinabove described views to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now to the said drawings the reference character 1 indicates a garment of the ready made type. The said garment is finished without a collar and lapels but is provided with the neck-opening 2 and the reveres 3 which form a foundation for the lapels. The said garment l is provided with a partial facing lbut the said reveres 3 and the inner face of said garment front adjacent thereto are unfinished, leaving exposed the canvas or hair-cloth filling The garment 1 when in this condition may be tried on and fitted to the form of the purchaser by making any alterations which may be necessary. After such alterations have been made the novel adjustable collar and lapels, embodying the principles of my present invention, may be placed in their proper relation with the garment, adjusted to a proper set and position and then firmly secured in place by the fitter, after which the garment may be finished by sewing said collar and lapels in their permanent position. The said novel form of collar and lapels comprises a collar-portion formed with the usual inner fold 6 and the outer fold T. Lapel-portions 8 are connected with said collar in proper relation thereto, the same being formed with integral facingportions 9. In adjusting the said collar and lapels in place the inner fold 6 of said. collar portion is brought in proper alinement and relation with the edge of the neckopening 2 of said garment 1, and the lapelportions 8 are placed over the reveres 3 of said garment 1, the facing-portions 9 of said lapel-portions being turned over upon the inner side of the fronts of said garment so to cover the exposed canvas or hair cloth filling 5 of the unfinished. facing of said garment 1. The said collar and lapels may now be raised, lowered or otherwise adjusted to a proper position with relation to said garment l by the litter, and so secured. The garment may then be removed from the form of the purchaser and finished by permanently sewing said collar and lapels in place, and otherwise finishing the appearance of the garment in the ordinary way. The free ends of the facing; portions 9 are sewed to the facing 4 of said garment 1 forming the seam 10. It will be readily understood however that the said facing-portions 9 may be made long enough to cover the entire inner facing of said garment if desired, thereby eliminating the said seam 10.
It will be clearly understood from the above description that my present invention provides a novel arrangement of ready made garment with separable collar and lapels which renders necessary alterations easy of accomplishment and assures a garment provided with a perfectly fitting collar and properly alined lapels. It will also be clearly evident that my invention is capable of use in all kinds of tailored garments of the ready made type, whether adapted for the use of men, women or children.
I am fully aware that changes may be made in the arrangements and combinations of the various parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the same, without departing from the scope of my present invention as described in the foregoing specification and as set forth in the appended claim. Hence, I do not limit my invention to the exact arral'lgements and combinations of the parts as described in said specification, nor do I confine myself to the exact details of the construction of said parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
1 claim In ready made garments for men, women and children the combination with the body of said garment of a collar and lapels portion formed in one part separable from said garment, but adapted to be secured permanently thereto after a proper fit of said garment is obtained, said collar and lapels portion comprising, a collar-portion provided with an inner and an outer fold, lapel-portions secured to said collarportion, said lapel-portions being formed with turned under facing-portions adapted to be secured to the inner faces of the fronts of said garment body, substantially as and for the purposes set forth. 7
In testimony, that I claim the invention set forth above I have hereunto set my hand this 12th day of August, 1909.
