Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIOE.
AUGUSTUS D. MARE, OE BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOE To EIMSELE AND JOHN E. o. MUNSEY, OE SAME PLAGE.
' IMPROVEMENT IN SHIRTS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 134,909, dated January 14, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS D. MARR, of Boston, of the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shirts or various other articles of like character; and do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the fol` lowing specification and represented in the accompanying drawing, of which- Figure l denotes a front view of a shirt provided with my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the bosom-front and parts of the shirt.
In this shirt, what is termed the bosom `front or facing A is applied to the shirt-body B, so that one-half of the said front may be folded back upon the other half and buttoned upon the buttons thereof, such front being furnished with buttons a a at one edge and button-holes b b b in the opposite part, as
shown. There is to the shirt-body another set of buttons, c c c, for the movable haltl of the bosom-front to button upon. The shirt-bosom, back of the front, is to open as in ordinary shirts, .or the opening may be down the back of the Shirt.
In carrying out my invention I combine with such bosom front or facing one or more half fronts or .iiies,' C D, of the shape of, and arranged underneath, the movable half of the bosom front or facing, or between Such and the shirt-bosom, each y being provided with button-holes to button upon either Set of the buttons.' I usually form each fly partly of a lining or piece of cloth shaped like the bosomfront, and folded at its middle, the rest of the iiy being a separate piece of'cloth of desirable material. The lining cloth is to be of a color different from that of the bosom-front, so that when the movable half of the latter is folded back upon lthe other. half of 'it a bosom-front of a different color-as red, for instance-will be shown, the main front being gray or blue mixed. The outer Surface of the second or next y and the inner surface of the first iiy may be made by a single piece of blue cloth,
doubled on itself, and provided with buttonholes to button on the buttons. The edges of each iiy and the bosom-front may be bound with binding.
second covered by it. This latter half of the second piece is to be Similarly connected to the half of the third covered by it, the whole vbeing So that when the first piece is folded the second piece will be shown unfolded, and when the Second is folded the third will he Seen unfolded and the first be folded. III this way a folding shirt-bosom may Joe produced of three pieces of cloth of different colors, which may be made to show a front of either color.
There may be other ways of Vmaking the flies, but that described I prefer because each piece of cloth when unfolded shows no seam down its middle.
Fig. 3 exhibits the above -descrilbed way, these pieces Of cloth A B U are tobe laid together to form the flies. If We Suppose A to be gray, B to be red, and C to be blue in color, half of B and half of A will constitute the first iiy C, half of B and half of C making the second fly D. According as each piece A', B', or C' is unfolded will the front surface of the shirt-front vary in color.
From the above it will be seen that the purpose of the invention is to enable the bosom of a shirt or garment to be folded so as to represent at one time a front of one color and at another time one of a different color.
What I claim is- 1. A folding shirt or garment front or facing,
A, made or provided with one or more reversible iiies, C D, to fold at the middle, and over and button from one side to the other of the front, all as and for the purpose set forth.
2. Two or more pieces, A B C', of cloth, arranged as shown in Fig. 3, and connected as described, so as to form a shirt or garment front or facing with one or more reversible iiies, G D, to operate as and for the purpose explained. Y
y AUGUSTUS D. MARR. Witnesses R. H. EDDY, J. R. SNOW.
