UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ISAAC sonnnnn, or New YORK, N. Y.
SHIRT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 274,520, dated March 27, 1883.
Application filed November 28, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ISAAC SGHNEER, of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Shirts, of which the following is a specification.
Figure l is a front view of my improved shirt 5 Fig. 2, an enlarged face view of part of the same, showing the additional face-strip partly folded down; Fig. 3, a cross-section on the line a c, Fig. 2; and Fig. 4, a cross-section of a modification of the invention.
This invention relates to certain improvements in shirts, more particularly the kind known as bicycle -shirts, which is a kind having lacing in front, and has for its object, so far as the bosom part ofthe shirt is conoerned, to allow the shirt to be readily opened and closed without interfering withthe lacing, and to provide for one half of the laced portion a face strip or piece which, except at the lower end, is disconnected from the shirt.
The invention also consists'in applying a pocket to the shirt directly below the bosom, and in utilizing the usual suspension-strap as a cover for that pocket.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter In one piece with this body are made the two parts, a. and b, which meet, or nearly meet, in front over the bosom. The part a, nearits edge, has series of eyelets or holes 01 in a vertical row; but the part b has no such eyelets, but, on the contrary, is provided at quite a distance from its edge with series of buttons 0.
The part it, having the eyelets d, constitutesone half of the bosom of the shirt. For the other half of the bosom I employ a separate strip, B, of fabric, which is fastened at its lower end by a short row of stitches,f, to the body of the shirt, and is otherwise not stitched This separate strip B has, near one edge, a row of eyelets, h, and near the other edge a row of button-holes, i. The portionhaving the button-holes iis overlapped by a narrow face-flap, j, which is attached to the strip B, so that the button-holes will not be exposed to view. To the inner side of the strip B is also fastened a flap, Z, which laps behind the part a of the bosom, as in Fig. 4, or said strip 1 may be attached to the inner side of the body A, behind the part a, as in Fig. 3. The inner edge of the strip B abuts against the edge of the part a, and the lacingcord 0 is drawn through the eyelets or holes d and h, so as to unite the strip B with the part a; but the shirt can be opened and closed without unfastening the cord 0 by simply unbuttoning the buttons 0 from the covered portion of the strip B, that has the button-holes i. By this means the ett'ect is produced of a bosom appearing to be laced and not otherwise secured, the buttons 6 being concealed when the shirt is closed, and yet the shirt can be opened and closed without interfering with the lacing, yet at the same time, when the strip B istaken away, a complete shirt will remain.
Below the bosom part the shirt is provided with the suspension-piece D, having a buttonhole which may be utilized to connect the shirt with the drawers or pantaloons, and below this suspension-piece D is formed on the shirt a pocket, E, which has, at its upper part, a button, to, to which the flap D can be buttoned, as shown. This pocket E is in convenient position for holding a watch or other valuable article, and will not interfere with the freedom of movement ofthe wearer. For gymnastic exercises, where a waistcoat is not usually worn, the shirt having this pocket will be found very convenient, much more so than one having a pocket over the breast, which, when filled, will interfere with respiration.
I claim-- 1. In a shirt, the combination of the body A, having bosom part a, with row of holes at therein, and part b, with buttons 6, the combination therewith of the face-strip B, which is fastened to the shirt only at the lower end, and which has a row of holes, 71., button-holes, t', and covering-flap j, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the shirt A, having bosom part a, and part b, with the face-strip B, having face-flap j, and with the backingflap 1, buttons 6, and lace-cord O, substantially as described.
3. In a shirt, the combination thereof with the pocket E, placed entirely below the bosom,
