UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE TILGHMAN FALLIS, OF ST. JOSEPH, MISSOURI.
DEVICE FOR UNBUTTONING SHOES, 80C.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 361,151, dated April 12, 1887.
Application filed September 28, 1686. Serial No. 214,741. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it'known that I, GEORGE TILGHMAN.
FALLIS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of St. Joseph, in the county of Buchanan and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoe- Unbuttoners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of this invention, and is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a vertical section. Fig. 3 is a perspective view and a. modification.
My invention relates to shoe-unbuttoners and button-hooks combined; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of parts, as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple device for the convenience of persons wearing button-shoes, so that shoes may be as conveniently and easily unbuttoned by using the improved device as they can now be buttoned by using the ordinary button-hook; and, further, by connecting the unbuttoner with the buttoner, to provide an implement that may be used for both purposes.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates the body of the unbnttoner, which is struck up from sheet metal or flattened wire, and is bent near the lower end to form the knuckle B. G designates the bowl of the unbuttoner, which is adapted to receive At the lower end of the bowl 0 is provided an integral terminal nib or lip, D, which is designed to pass through the button-hole and extend under the edge of the leather or other material.
For convenience, the ordinary button-hook is combined with the unbnttoner either by being hinged thereto or in rigid form, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3. The shoe-unbuttoner may be used for unbnttoning garments as well as shoes.
The operation is simple, and is as follows: Taking hold of the handle, the nib or lip D is made to enter the open or larger end of the button-hole and the bowl Oto cover the button. Then by a slight twist of the handle, either to the right or left, the nib or lip D is made to pass under the edge of the material of theshoe, and by a gentle pressure toward the opposite side of the button -hole the button -hole is opened and the button is ejected.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. In a device for unbuttoning shoes and other articles, the concavity or bowl-shaped socket having a nib and adapted to receive or engage a button and eject it 'from the buttonhole, substantially as specified.
2. As an improved article of manufacture, the unbuttoner comprising the handle, bowl, and nib, and having a button-hook attached to the handle of the unbuttoner, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE TILGHMAN FALLIS.
Witnesses:
I. G. HAMMAN, J. M. WILsoN.
