".PETEBS. FHDTD-U'I'HOGRAPNER WA MING N D C UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEQ LESSER LESZYNSKY, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
BUTTON.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 232,044, dated. September '7, 1880.
Application filed July 3, 1880.
To all whom t't may concern Be it known that I, LESSER LESZYNSKY, of the city and county of San Francisco, and State of California, have invented an Improved Button for Clothing and other Arti ales; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to an improvement in buttons and similar devices which are used for connecting portions of clothing or other articles together; and it consists of a stem having two parts projecting from the button or head, in combination with a rubber or other elastic center, which is held between the button and the goods and furnishes an elastic non-wearing surface which the button-hole surrounds.
Referring to the accom panyiug drawings for a more complete explanation of my invention, Figure l is a view of a button with its shank in position to be pushed through the cloth. Fig. 2 shows the button attached and the elastic center.
A is the body of a button or head of any desirable form, and B B are the wires torming the shank. These are secured to the head in any desirable or convenient manner, and project side by side, so as to be long enough to pass through the fabric or article which is to be fastened. They are made of a material sufficiently flexible to be bent without breaking and stiff enough to pass through the goods, and they are independent from the body of the button, which may thus be made of any desired material. Around this shank and close to the button I form an elastic center, 0, which is preferably made of rubber or similar (No niodeli) material, and has a depth equal tothat of the button-hole which is to be connected.
When my button is to be attached to a garment the double shank B is pushed through the fabric at the proper point until the center G presses against the material, after which the two parts of the shank are separated and folded down upon the side opposite to the button, thus holding it firmly in place. It may be applied to clothing, and if removed from one point to another no hole will be apparent to disfigure the garment. It is especially valuable in securing shoe-buttons, as it dispenses with all stitching, and the buttons cannot be pulled OH.
The elastic center around which the buttonhole fits will prevent the wear of the latter which usually takes place.
My invention may be applied to all kinds of buttons and button-fastenings, ordinary and military buttons, and b v'the use of an independent shank the head of the button may be cast, spun, turned, or stamped of any material different from the shank itself.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A button for clothing, eonsistiugof the head A and the two-part shank B, in combination with the elastic center G, substantially as and for the purpose herein described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
LESSER LESZYNSKY.
