BUTTON.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JENNm F. FARNUM, a citizen. of the United States, and resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in But tons, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to buttons andits object is to provide means by which covered buttons may be prepared and covered with the material from which the clothing to which they are attached is made, and consists of a base upon which is fitted the blank to be covered, the blank having a shank to pass through the base and be attached to the clothing as will be more fully shown and described in the following specification, and the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved button. The button consists of a base 10 of hard rubber or any desired material and having a depressed portion 11 so that a rim 12 is formed on its outer edge. At the middle of the base is a slot 13 through which passes a shank 14L of the mold or form 15.

The mold or form is preferably of wood or similar material and is of the desired shape and circular so to fit within the rim 12 of the button. The mold is covered with a cloth or silk that is gathered on the under side and stitched to prevent its release. The shank 14: passes through an opening in the mold and is spread or clenched at its outer ends so that it will not work loose or pass through the mold when once secured.

After the silk or cloth is secured to the mold and stitched thereon, the shank 14: is passed through the opening 13 of the base and twisted at right angles thereto as shown Specification of Letters Patent.

in Fig. 2. The pressure of cloth between the mold and the base may be sullicient to retain the shank in its locked position, and it is then sewed to the garment.

These parts may be made in quantities detached so that tailors or dress makers may purchase them and put the desired covering on the mold and. any inexperienced person may then secure the parts together and attach the button to the clothing.

It is obvious that the parts may be otherwise arranged or modified without departing from the essential. features above described.

In the modified for-in shown in Fig. 7, a washer 17 may be applied to the upper end of the form 15 and has a threaded opening to receive the screw eye it passing through the opening in the baseilO and through the form 15 so as to hold the parts together, the washer being hidden by neans of the fabric covering 16 which may be carried beneath the form 15' and stitched so as to prevent its release.

WVhat I claim as new is, 1. In a button, the combination with a mold adapted to receive a covering of fabric, of a base with. a slot ata central point, and a shank on. the mold with an eye adapted to pass through the slot and. be turned so as to prevent its retraction.

2. In a button, the combination with a base having a rim and a slot at a central point, of a mold to fit within the rim and. adapted to receive a covering, and an eye secured. to the mold by a shank and adapted to be passed tiirough the slot and turned so as to prevent the retraction of the eye and mold.
