EAR-MUFF ATTACHMENT FOR HATS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 2, 1907.
Application filed March 13, 1905. Serial No. 249,747.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY BORNEMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing in Paterson, Passaic county, New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ear-Muff Attachments for Hats; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has for its object to provide an ear-muff attachment for mens hats which shall be simple and inexpensive to manufacture, is capable of being folded or rolled into small space whennot in use, as inside the sweat-band of the hat, and may be readily applied to or removed from the hat.
A further object of the invention is to so make the attachment that it may be used as a hat-guard.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 shows a hat in section with the attachment in place. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of one of the ear-muffs proper, and Fig. 3 is a plan view thereof.
In the drawings, a is a hook, and b a cord attached thereto by being passed through a hole in one shank of the hook and knotted. The other shank of the hook is the longer, and its projecting portion is formed with an inbend a. The cords may or may not be elastic.
Figs. 2 and 3 show one of the ear-muifs proper. There are preferably two thicknesses to each, the same being stitched together at their edges. Each thickness is made up of two sections (Z and c, stitched together along their edges f, which in the blank are slightly curved, so that in the finished article there is the convexity shown. The upper edge of each muff is straight, and in it is secured a bar of wire or the like 76, which maintains the shape of the muff and prevents elongation and wrinkling. The ear-muff is formed with a central bend l, which protrudes from the muff and through which a cord m, which may be passed under the chin of the wearer and have the hooks a attached to its ends, passes. n is a cordgrip or clench which is attached to the bottom portion of each ear-muff and removably receives and holds the cord m. When the attachment is to be used as a hat-guard, the cord is detached from the clenches or grips and the ear-muffs slid along the cord and folded inside the sweat-band, one hook a being left attached to the hat and the other being engaged in a buttonhole of the wearers coat. When not in use, the fabric-pieces forming the ear-muffs proper may be folded or rolled up, together with the cord or cords, and tucked in the sweat-band.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In an ear-muff attachment for hats, the combination of fabric pieces forming the earmuffs proper, a transverse bar secured in each fabric piece at the top thereof, a cord having a running engagement with said bars, means for attaching the ends of said cord to a hat and means for detachably securing the lower ends of said fabric pieces to said cord, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoingI have hereunto set my hand this 9th day of March, 1905.
