PROTECTING HEAD-GEAR OR HAT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 746,976, dated December 15, 1903.

Application filed June 27, 1903.

, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhat tan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Head-, Gear Protector, of whichthe following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved head-gear protector, more especially designed for protecting ladies hats and other head-gear against rain, dust, and

the like to prevent the hat from being spoiled or injured, the protector being very simple and durable in construction, cheap to manufact are, and easily applied to properly lit the hat without danger of injuring the trimmings thereof.

The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claim.

A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure l is a perspective view of the improvement as applied. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the blank for forming the body of the protector, and Fig. 3 is a front elevation of th improvement.

The body or main portion A of the protector is formed of a Waterproof material which is exceedingly lightfor instance, such as very thin elastic rubberand the body'A is made circular or oval in shape, according to. the shape of the head-gear to be protected, and the peripheral edge of the body is provided with a suitable binding B, preferably made of a non-elastic material, such as a strip of woven fabric material not liable to stretch.

A peripheral portion C of the body A and a corresponding portion of the binding is folded or gathered, as plainly indicated in Fig. 3, and this folded or gathered portion 0 is secured to one side of a straight head-band D,

and on the ends of the straight band D are secured tying-bandsE orother suitable fastening devices.

Now by attaching the gathered portion 0 on the straight head-band D the body or main of the wearer, so that the sides of the hatprotector hang downward on the sides of the head of the wearer, and then the tying-bands Eare drawn rearwardly over the depending side and rear portions of the body A, and the terminals of the said tying-bands are then tied together at the back of the wearers head, as plainly indicated in Fig. 1, so as to completely inclose the wearers hat, and at the same time the depending rear portions form a protector for the wearers neck and shoulders.-

Now by having the body of the protector which extends over the hat made of rubber or like waterproof elastic material it is evident that rain and dust are not liable to injure the hat nor the trimmings thereof, no matter how delicate.

'By placing the binding B on the body or main portion of the protector the latter is greatly strengthened, and the folded or gathcred portion can be more readily fastened by sewing or the like to the head'band D.

p The protector is very simple and durable in construction, can be cheaply manufactured, and owing to its extreme lightness can be readily carried when not in use in a pocket or satchel, and in case of need it can be im mediately placed in position over the headgear, so as to protect the same against rain, dust, and the like.
