To all 'whom z' may concern:
Be it known that I, JEAN GoLDsMrrH DU- PONT, a citizen ofthe United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois7 have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bonnets, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to bonnets and more particularly to those made for infants and childrens wear.
The object of the invention is to provide a bonnet which is made of a single flat piece of fabric so that it can be easily laundried and which can be readily folded into shape to iit around and be held upon the head.
The invention consists in the several novel features hereinafter set forth and more particularly defined by claims at the conclusion hereof.
In the drawings: Figure l is a perspective of a child wearing a bonnet embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a plan of the bonnet when it is flat. Fig. 3 is a detail showing the elastic band for fastening the bonnet around the head.
A circular piece of suitable textile fabric is cut of sufficient size to extend around the top, back and sides of the head. The edge of this piece of fabric is usually protected by a hem or bindin as indicated at B. Stitched apertures a are formed near the margin of the fabric A and a gathering band C is threaded through these apertures. The band C consists of a piece of non-elastic ribbon c, a part of which, approximately onehalf, is normally puckered and folded around a strip of elastic D, so as to permit the elastic strip to be stretched around the head. The elastic strip D, which is dis osed in the puckered portion of the band has its ends secured to the band, approximately and serve to yieldingly hold the bonnet close Y to and snugly on the head.
The invention exemplifies a bonnet which consists of a single flat piece of fabric which can be easily ironed when it is unfolded and the band has been removed, and in which a circular piece of fabric can be utilized so that it will yieldingly and snugly iit and be held on the head.
The invention is not to be understood as restricted to the details set forth, since these may be modified within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. A bonnet consisting of a single flat piece of fabric having marginal holes therein and removable gathering means comprising an elastic strip and a loose non-elastic covering around the elastic, both the elastic strip and covering extending through the marginal holes.
2. A bonnet consisting of a single flat piece of fabric having marginal holes therein and gathering means adapted to be threaded through said holes and comprising an elastic strip and a loose non-elastic covering around the elastic, extended beyond the ends of the elastic strip.
