Description

y 2, 1939- H. M. HALL STAY-BIB BONNET APRON Filed Aug. 31, 1938 INVENTOR.
hEr r ATTORNEY.
Patented May 2, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 3 Claims.
My invention relates to a stay-bib bonnet apron and more particularly an apron which is adapted to be worn in various combinations as an apron or a bonnet.
Most women. and particularly those who are fastidious about their make-up as well as about protecting themselves in the performance of their several duties in and around the house, feel the necessity of donning an apron at one time for inside work and a bonnet or head covering when some duty calls for their presence for outside work at another time.
Work within the house also varies in charactor, for example, when the task of preparing a breakfast and washing the dishes has been completed, the sweeping and dusting duties present themselves. In the performance of the latter duties, a head covering to protect a freshly shampooed head or a newly set permanent wave must be provided, and at other times to protect the head or the head and shoulders from a scorching sun when an out-of-doors errand is necessitated. It is then convenient to change the apron from the position where it is worn a body protector 5 to that wherein it is worn as a head protector without the effort of seeking some other headwear.
The present invention serves to attain this double need in a more up-to-date fashion and useful manner. An important object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which can be changed from one wearing mode to another in serving a woman in the several capacities stated.
It is one of the important objects of this invention to provide a stay-bib apron which eliminates the use of neck strings and shoulder straps to keep the bib portion of an apron in place. Hence, the apron is more easily and readily donned.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a reinforced bosom or bib section which is smooth and neat across the top section of the chest and which, when tied around the wearer will not only be self-sustaining but will adequately support the skirt portion or apron flap, be it integral with or detachably affixed thereto.
It is a still further object of the invention to provide an apron bonnet and a bonnet per se;
said bonnet may be the bib portion only of the apron.
For the purpose of accomplishing the foregoing and such other objects as will hereinafter appear, my invention is directed to the stay-bib bonnet apron combination described in the following specification and defined in the claims appended thereto.
The specification is accompanied by a drawing in which- Fig. 1 is a perspective view showing the improved stay-bib bonnet apron.
Fig. 2 is a section taken on line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a side view showing the stay-bib alone in use as a bonnet.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, the numeral 40 indicates the stay-bib portion of the garment, the flap or skirt portion 45 being shown detachably secured to the outer face of said stay-bib portion by means of a plurality of loops 48. Said stay-bib has embedded within it a plurality of vertically extending fiat, pliable stay strips 4|, 42 shown in a spaced, approximately parallel relation to each other. Said stay strips desirably consist of Celluloid.
The stay-bib 40 is shown of a truncated lozenge shape, but various other designs may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the claimed invention. The stay-bib 40 is shown having six vertical Celluloid stay members 4| and 42, the strips 42 stiffening its end edges. To each of its end portions is attached a streamer connection 46.
Also, said stay-bib 4D is removably fastened to the skirt or depending flap 45 by means of said streamer bands 46, said bands being insertable through loops 48 carried by the upper corner portions of the skirt 45. Each band or connection 46 overlies the adjacent end portion of the stay-bib sufiiciently to be attached thereto by means of stitching 49.
The flap 45 is stiffened throughout its upper portion by means of the vertical central Celluloid strip 5| and lateral Celluloid strips 52, but these three strips may be made of metal or other suitable means may be substituted for them. By the provision of these stiffening strips, the upper portion of the flap 45 between its loops 48 is prevented from drooping or folding upon itself.
In Fig. 3, the stay-bib 40 is shown detached from the skirt and being worn as a hat or bonnet, the connections 46 being tied into bows 461).
It should be understood that the present disclosure is for the purpose of illustration only, and that this invention includes: all modifications and equivalents which fall within the scope of the subject matter claimed.
What I claim is:
1. In a combined apron and. bonnet construction, a waist encircling element having a bosom section provided with stay means, and a flap provided with suspending loops whereby said flap means to detachably secure said flap to said is detachab ly secured tosaid waist encircling stay-bib in a pendant relation thereto, said element in a pendant position. means comprising loops disposed at opposite sides 2. The subject matter of claim 1, and said flap of said flap, and said loops being connected to 5 having vertically disposed stiffening members said stay-bib by passing said streamers through 5 fastened thereto between said loops. them.
3. In an apron construction, a stay-bib, HETTIE M. HALL. streamers fastened to said stay-bib, a flap, and
