' IMPROVEMENT IN WATCH CHAIN FASTENING HENRY JAHNE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF, GERRI'I SMITH, AND ANTHONY J. G. HODENPYL, OF SAME PLACE.
Letters Patent No. 60,522, dated December 18, 1866.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONOERN:
Be it known that I, HENRY JAHNE, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Watch Chain Fastening; andvI do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a front view of my improved watch chain fastening, and
Figure 2 represents a detail view of the fastening alone, drawn on a larger scale.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts. A
My invention has for its object, the constructing and attaching to a watch chain of a fastening in such a manner that the latter may be well secured to the vest-coat, or other part of wearing apparel, to which it attaches the chain, and still be easily detachable from the same by the wearer, and one that will not injure said wearing apparel, and be very ornamental besides. And my invention consists in so combining a golden or gilt bow or bent wire with a spring or other lock, that said bow will be looked after it is placed through the button hole of a vest-coat, and cannot be unlocked by pick-pockets, unless they know where to touch the spring by which said lock is closed, and in attaching and securely fastening to said lock the watch chain, thus securing all the advantages which this invention has for its object.
The golden or gilt bow a, which consists of a bent wire, is pivoted at one end to and between the plates b, of the lock, while its other end is. flattened and perforated with a square hole, through which the bolt c, of the lock passes. Said bolt is pressed forward and through the hole by the spring d, and the bow is thus kept securely locked. It is opened by a pin attached to said bolt, which pin passes through the front plate of the lock and plays in a slot, c, and by then pushing said pin in a direction contrary to the one towards which the spring presses a small plate f, which is pivoted to the front plate of the lock at its lower end, and through the upper end of which the above-mentioned pin passes, is employed for the the pui-poseof covering the slot c, and operating the spring bolt. The watch chain A, iseither soldered or screwed into the lower part of said lock. The shape of said lock may vary, and its surface may be enamelled or inlaid with jewels or otherwise be decorated, so as to make it a very useful and ornamental article. The bow a, being rounded at every portion of its surface, will not injure the vest-coat through which it passes, as did the bars heretofore used; said bars being directly attached to the chain, the coming in contact .of which with the vest-coat tearing the latter, and injuring it to a large degree. 4
I claim, and desire to securevby Letters Patent- A Watch chain fastening composed of a case b, containing a spring bolt c, operated by the guard fand provided with a hinged shackle a, at one end and a ring at the other end, as a new article of manufacture.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 31st day of May, 1866.
HENRY JAHNE.
