UNITED PATENT @FFIQE.
FREDRICK JAMES LEGGOTT, OF PERU, ILLINOIS.
SHOE-CLOSER.
To all whom "it may concern;
Be it known that I, FREDRICK JAMES LEG- oo'r'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Peru, in the county of Lasalle and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoe-Closers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to shoe closers, and particularly to closers for low shoes and slippers of the Blucher type, and the object of my invention is to provide a sim le and readily operable closer and sealing fiap therefor to cover its clasp, and removable therefrom, and which forms a handle of the closer.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating my invention, and forming a part of this specification, and wherein like characters are used to designate like parts throughout the several figures, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a shoe provided with my improved closer. Fig. 2 is a face view of the clasp plate and its sealing flap. Fig. 3 is a face view of the plate carrying the fastening pin. Fig. at is a horizontal sectional view taken through the shoe closing flaps, illustrating my improved closer clasped in its operative position in connection therewith. Fig. 5 is a perspective View of the clasp plate shown in Fig. 2, with its concealed flap removed. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the plate shown in Fig. 3, and, Fig. 7 is a face view of a closer constituting a slightly modified form of my invention.
In the practical embodiment of my invention, I provide a shoe A of the Blucher type, embodying side closing flaps B, with a metallic plate 1, secured to one of said flaps by means of eyelet 2, provided with an outstanding angularly-headed pin 3, said plate being curved to conform with the shape of the shoe, when connected thereto, as shown in Fig. at. Upon their opposite closing flaps B is secured a clasp plate 4, provided with a centrally extending tongue 5, having a longitudinally alined series of openings 6 therein, anyone of which is adapted for engagement over the outstanding pin 3, of plate 1, and further provided at its end beyond said series of openings, with an outstanding bracket loop 7. Said plate 4 is secured to its respective shoe flap B, by means of a lever concealing flap 8, to which said plate is secured by eyelets 9, as shown in Fig. 2, and which is sewed, as shown in Fig. 1, or other- Specification of Letters Patent.

wise secured to the shoe flap. The leather concealing flap B is provided with a centrally extending tongue portion 10, extending from the tongue portion 5 of said plate 4, and provided with a longitudinal cut out portion 11 in its internal face and directly overlying the openings (3 of said tongue portion 5, to allow the pin 3 to project therethrough. The ton ue portion 10 of the leather plate 8 is further provided with a reduced extension piece 12, projecting beneath and through the bracket loop 7 of the clasp plate l, and forming thereby, a handle for the manipulation of said clasp plate, thereby rendering the tongue portion 10 of said plate 8, removable from above the openings (3.
In Fig. 7, I have shown a slightly modified form providing two-clasp plates, which are formed similarly to the tongue portion 5 of the plate st, and which are secured at their rear ends to a leather covering flap 13, having two extending tongue portions 14 formed similar to the tongue portion 10 of the concealing flap 8. ith this form, a plate 15 is provided to be secured upon the opposite shoe clasp, having two outstanding pins 16, in place of plate 1.
Having fully described my invention, I claim:
1. In a shoe closer of the character described, the combination of the shoe closing flaps, a curved metal plate secured to one of said flaps, and provided with an outstanding angularly-headed pin, a clasp plate secured to the opposite one of said flaps, and provided with a series of alined openings for engagement with said pin, and a concealing flap for said clasp plate forming a handle for the same, said concealing flap being secured to overlie said clasp plate, and having its portion covering the said series of openings thereof, removable therefrom, substantially as described.
2. In a shoe closer of the character described, the combination of the shoe closing flaps, a curved metal plate secured to one of said flaps, and provided with an outstanding angularly-headed pin, a clasp plate secured to the opposite one of said flaps, and provided with a series of alined openings, for engagement with said pin, and with an outstanding bracket loop beyond and adjacent said series of openings, and a concealing flap for said clasp plate, secured to overlie the same, and having its portion covering the said openings, provided with an eX- tension passing beneath and through said bracket loop, to form a handle for manipulating the said clasp plate, and whereby the said portion thereof may be removed from said openings, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature 111 presence of two Witnesses.
FREDRICK JAMES LEGGOTT.
