To all whom it may concern: 1
Be it known that I, MARSHALL B. GARD- NER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Aurora, in the county of Kane and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corset- Clasps'; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the ac companying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in corset clasps and consists of the matters hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the appendedclaims.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved corset clasp which will soconnect and hold the clasp stays of a corset together as to prevent buckling or tilting of the stays and the resulting gaping between them, with its attendant discomfort to the wearer.
The advantages of my. invention will a pear as I proceed with my specification.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a corset to which my improved clasps have been applied.
Fig. 2 illustrates on an enlarged scale, a fragmentary part in front elevation of the two clasp stays with the clasp parts applied, and with the two parts of the clasp in position as when attached.
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, but with the stays and clasp parts in the position as they appear when being engaged or disengaged.
Fig. f is a view representing a transverse section through Fig. 2 in a plane indicated by the line H of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a view representing-a transverse section through Fig. 3 in a plane indicated by the line 5-5 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 6 represents in side elevation on a still greater scale, a view of one of the clasp members.
Referring now in detail to that embodiment of my invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings :10 indicates the corset body which opens in front where are attached the clasp members. 11, 12 indicate the stiifening strips or stays at the respective sides of the opening in the front of the corset body.
' The body and head, 18 and 19, are inthe form of a mushroom with-the head projecting beyond the body and inclined to the vertical axis of the body in a direction toward the opening between the two parts of the corset body. The head 1% is substantially larger than the slot part 17 of the eyelet member, and is nearly but not quite so large as the hole 16 of said member. In
other words, it is of a size suchthat it may be easily slipped through said hole. One side, 19*, of the head, namely, the side farthest away from the corset opening, is rounded transversely, whilethe opposite side is straight and has a bottom edge 19 extending at right angles to the length of the slot 15 of the eyelet member 13. The edge 19 of the stud head is adapted for engagement at its ends in grooves 21 at the sides of the hole 16 in the eyelet member. The body 18 of the stud is oval, that is to say, elongated 1n cross-section and diametrically opposite the edge 19 of the stud head, the said body 13 provided with an enlargement at its base. The body 18 thus presents a comparatively large base to bear upon its stay transversely of the width of the stay, so that when riv eted thereto it will be held rigidly against rocking movement with respect to the stay.
The parts are constructed to operate as follows. When the eyelet and stud members namely the hole 16. The stud is then drawn either by the hand of the wearer, or by the natural expansion of the body, from the larger hole opening 16 toward the narrower slot opening 17. lVhen the stud has been fully drawn home to the end of the eyelet opening, the head flange 19" will engage in the notches 21, 21 on the eyelet member. ;\.S will be manifest from a consideration of Fig. this will result in an absolute lock oi the stud to the eyelet member, which will not only prevent the corset from open ing, but will also prevent throughout the length of the two stays, and particularly in the location oi each clasp, a rocking or tilting movement of one stay with respect to the other stay.
It will be apparent to those familiar with the art that the improved clasp will not become disengaged in the ordinary movements or the wearer as in the case of the familiar clasp devices heretofore provided :for corsets, and also that the improved clasp will perform the additional function of preventing tilting or buckling between the clas stays, to obviate which other attachments in addition to the clasps have heretofore been applied to corset stays.
I claim as my invention:
1. A clasp of the kind described comprising an eyelet member and a stud member, the eyelet member having akey hole slot, and the stud member consisting of a body of comparatively large cross-section in a direction transverse of the stay to which it is to be attacl'ied, and of ahead inclined downwardly and provided with a flange adapted for engagement with the eyelet member when the clasp members are in locked position.
2. A clasp of the kind described, coinprising an eyelet member having a key hole slot, and a. stud member having a body elongated in cross s ction, a rivet shank at its bottom end and a comparatively large head at its top end, said head being inclined downwardly in one direction and being provided with a flange adapted for engagement with the eyelet member when the clasp members are in locked position, and the eyelet member being provided at each side oi the slot with grooves adapted to be engaged by said flange in said locked position.
3. A clasp of the kind described, cou'iprising an eyelet member having a key hole slot, and a stud member having a body elonal in cross section, said body being enged at one side of its base, ha ing rivet shank at its bottom end and having a comparatively large head at its top end, said head being inclined downwardly in one direction and being provided with a flange adapted for engagement with the eyelet member when the clasp members are in locked position, and the eyelet member being provided at each side of the slot with grooves adapted to be engaged by said flange in said locked position.
