GARMENT-FASTENER- Specification of Letters Patent.
katented May 29, 1906.
Application filed April 4, 1905. Serial No. 258,885.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENCE B. BOWLING, a citizen of the United States, residing at De troit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Garment-Fastener, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to garment-fasteners.
The object of the invention is to provide a garment-fastener which shall be thoroughly effective in securing in position articles of apparel such as the plackets or the waistband of a dress and which shall be simple of construction and positive in holding the parts combined.
I/Vith the above and other objects in view, as will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction and combination of parts of a garment-fastener, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which like characters of reference indicate correspond.- ing parts, Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a garment-fastener constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a view in vertical longitudinal section. Fig. 3 is a view in vertical transverse section. Fig. 4 is a perspective detail view of the front plate of the device before being shaped to final form. Fig. 5 is a perspective detail view of a slightly-modified form of front plate. Fig. 6 exhibits the improvement carried into effect in connection with a corset fastener. Fig. 7 is a detached detail View of the front plate. Fig. 8 is a similar view of the back plate. Fig. 9 is a similar view of a slightly-modified form of front plate. Fig. 10 is a sectional detail view of a modified form of front plate. Fig. 11 is a still further modified form of the front plate.
The fastener of the present invention embodies a front plate 1, a back plate 2, a fastening device for assembling the two plates, and designated generally 3, a locking-stud 4, and a locking-stud guard 5.
The two plates are made of any suitable material, preferably of metal, and each is provided with a plurality of orifices 6, through which a thread may be inserted to combine the plate with the article of wearing-apparel The front plate 1 is provided near one end with a longitudinally-disposed. oblong slot 7, in which is adapted to fit the shank 8 of the socket member 9 of the fastening device, the object of the oblong slot being to permit the socket member to have a limited longitudinal movement to compensate for strains to which the fastener will be subjected in use, thereby to obviate danger of loosening the fastening device, which might otherwise result if the connection between the socket member and the front plate were rigid in character,
The fastening device is of the ordinary glove type and. includes in addition to the socket member a locking member 10, having, as shown, a cage-like head 1 1 to fit within the socket member and by frictional contact therewith to hold the two members properly assembled, the locking member being combined with the back plate 2. This plate carries at the end opposite the locking member a locking-stud 4, which is rigidly combined with the plate 1, as being riveted thereto, and is provided at its free end with a head 12. This locking-stud is designed to engage a keyhole-opening 13 in the front plate, the shank of the locking-stud being of a size to fit somewhat loosely in the slot of the keyhole-opening and the head 4 being of a size readily to pass through the eye of the opening, the terminal of the slot being so disposed relatively to the shank of the stud that when the members of the locking device are in engagement the stud will engage the rear wall of the slot, and thereby positively prevent the head from becoming disconnected from the plate.
In order to prevent the head from catching upon articles and also to facilitate the interlocking of the plates, the guard 5 is provided, which, as shown in Fig. 4, consists of a tongue 14, which projects from one end of the front plate 1 and has its intermediate portion struck up to form a hollow boss 15, in which the head 12 will be housed. The tongue is provided with orifices 16 to register with similar orifices 17 in the body of the plate and surrounding the keyhole-opening, the said orifices being engaged by rivets 18 to hold the guard combined with the plates.
It will generally be preferred to form the guard integral with the front plate, as described; but, if desired, it may be made as a separate element and secured to the plate, as shown in Fig. 5, wherein the guard 19 is exhibited as being struck up from a separate piece of metal and secured to the plate by rivets 20.
In the form of the invention shown in Figs. 6, 7, and 8 the front plate 21 carries any desired number of socket members 22, which are similar to those shown in Fig. 2, and a like number of spaced tongues 23, provided with keyhole-openings 24, while the back plate is provided with a like number of heads 25 to engage the socket members and with a like number of locking-studs 26 to engage with the keyhole-openings 24.
In the form of the invention shown in Fig. 9 the front plate 27 instead of being provided with tongues 24 is made of a straight strip of metal, and under certain conditions this form of the invention will be found of advantage over that shown in Fig. 7, especially where a fleshy person will wear the corset provided with this fastener.
It will be noted that in Figs. 6 to 9 the :keyhole-openings are devoid of guards; but,
if preferred, these may be combined with the tongue 23, as indicated at 28, Fig. 10, and with thefront plate 27, as shown at 29, in
Fig. 11.
It will be seen from the foregoing description that although the garment-fasteners of this invention are exceedingly simple in construction they combine in a ready and practical manner all of the essentials requisite for the production of a thoroughly effective device and, moreover, by the manner in which the parts are constructed and combined that certainty of operation is secured with the minimum danger of derangement in use.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is' 1. A garment-fastener comprising a front and a back plate, the back plate being provided with a yielding head rigid with the plate, and the front plate being provided with a socketed member to engage the head and capable of longitudinal movement rela tively to the front plate.
2. A garment-fastener comprising a back plate having at one end a yielding head and at its other end a headed stud, a front plate having at one end a socket adapted for limited longitudinal movement relatively to the front plate and adapted to engage the head, and at its other end a keyhole-opening to be engaged by thestud, and a guard disposed over the opening.
3. A garment-fastener comprising a front plate provided at one end with a keyholeopening and with a guard disposed over the opening and integral with the plate, and at its other end with a socketed locking member combined for limited longitudinal movement relatively to the front plate, and a back plate provided at one end with a headed stud to engage the keyhole-opening, and at its other end with a yielding head. to engage the socketed member.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as CLARENCE B. BOWLING.
