NATHANIEL D. ALLEN, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
SHOE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NATHANIEL D. AL EN, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, inthe county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Shoes, of which the following is a. specification.
This invention relates to certain novel and useful improvements in shoes.
In carrying out the present invention it is my purpose to provide a shoe which may be slipped on and off quickly and conveniently, which will fit the foot nicely and comfortably when worn, which will retain its shape and which may be quickly and conveniently fastened.
It is also my purpose to provide a shoe wherein the fastening devices may be rapidly and conveniently manipulated to fasten and unfasten the shoe;
With the above recited objects in view, and others of a like nature, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing :Figure 1 is a perspective View of the shoe constructed in accordance with my present in vention. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the shoe showing the parts opened. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the shoe closed. Fig. 1 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view through the shoe. Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view therethrough. Fig. 6 is a collective view showing the fastening device removed from the shoe and in perspective.
Referring now to the drawings in detail A designates a shoe comprising a vamp 1, and upper 3, having a reinforcing band 2 extending around its counter portion.
In accordance with my present invention, the upper 3 is slit asat 4 at the rear. of the shoe and such slit extends from the heel seat to the top end of the upper. The reinforcing band 2 extending around the counterportion of the shoe is cut out as at 5 from the top of such band to the heel seat to expose the slit in the upper. The counterportion of the upper at the slit therein is secured to the reinforcing band 2 as at 6. while fastened to one end edge of the slit portion of the upper is a fly 7 adapted to overlap the upper at the other side of the slit portion. The companion members of fastening devices or clasps are secured Specification of Letters Patent.
to the inner surface of the fly 7 and the outer surface of that portion of the upper which the fly overlaps, respectively.
In the present instance each fastening Patented Feb. 15, 1916.

device comprises male and female members 8 and 9 respectively, and the female member is carried by the upper while the male member is secured to the fly. The male member embodies a hollow rivet-like body 10 embedded in the fly having one end offset to secure the same to the fly, and the remaining end formed with a tongue 11 overlying the adjacent end of the body. The female member is identically formed, but in this case the outer end of the tongue 11 is bent inwardly against the adjacent edge of the body as at 12 so that a space 13 is formed between the tongue and the adja: cent edge of the body that will receive the tongue of the male member, when the'members are connected together in clasped or fastener'formation.
In the actual use of the fasteners, the offset ends of the male members carried by the fly 7 are preferably colored to correspond with the color of the fly, and the hollow bodies of such membersmay be filled with some suitable material.
Secured to the counter 2 at lower end of the slit therein is a tongue 14 whereby the shoe may be easily and conveniently drawn onto the foot of-the wearer.
It will'be' seen that I have provided a shoe wherein the use of buttons, laces and analogous fastening devices is eliminated, while' 1. A shoe comprising an upper and a reinforcing member therefor extending around the counter portion of the upper, the
upper being slit centrally of its rear portion from the top to the heel seat and the rein-.
forcing member being cut out at the center of the counter portion from the top to the heel seat to expose the slit in the upper, and a fly secured. to one edge of the slit portion of said upper and adapted to overlap the upper at the other side of the slit therein.
2. A shoe comprising an upper and areinforcing member therefor extending around the counter portion of the upper, the upper being slit centrally of its rear portion from the top to the heel seat-and the reinforcingmember being cut out at the center of the counterportion from the top to the heel seat to expose the slit in the upper, a fly secured to one edge of the slit portion of said upper and adapted to overlap the upper at the other-side of the slit therein, and a tongue having one end secured to the counter portion of said upper at the lower end of the slit therein to facilitate the application of the shoe to the foot.
3. A shoe comprising an upper and a re-- inforcing member therefor extending around the counter portion of the upper, the upper being slitcentrally of its rear portion from the top to the heel seat and the reinforcing member being cut out at the center of the counter portion from the top to the heel seat to expose the slit in the upper, a fly secured to one edge of the slit portion of said upper and adapted to overlap the upper at the other side of the slit therein, and fasten:
ing devices having the members thereof carried by the inner surface of said fly and the outer surface of that portion of the upper counter portion from the top to the heel seat to expose the slit in the upper, a tongue having one end secured to the counter portion of the upper at the lower end of the slit therein to facilitate the application of the shoe to the foot, and means for fastening the upper about the foot at the slit therein.
In testimony whereof Ihfiixmy signature in presence of two witnesses.
